brake trouble 1991 volvo 940?

I was pulling out of my parking lot today when very suddenly, my passenger side front started making a ker-thunk ker-thunk noise that made the tire area shake & just kept getting louder.....I pulled to the side & looked but nothing obvious seemed out of place, I wasn't dragging anything and nothing appeared loose. When I backed up, the noise & shaking (more like a quick up & down shake) got worse....i creeped back to my apartment because i apparently wasn't going anywhere....the tire is fine, is it possible I've developed a brake problem?

Sounds more like a balljoint, tierod or strut.
