I have a 97 dodge stratus(could it be fast?)matt0897 07-06-2004, 11:28 AM hi i got a 97 dodge stratus 2.4L DOHC automatic transmission. i was just wondering could it be fast and does manual and auto make a big difference? im thinking that a manual car of any type is faster than the automatic of the same make. if anyone has some suggestions on what i could do to it or any comments at all bad or good jsut say em they will help me out. i think its cool when someone has a nice ass car and its fast but then they race a shitty(or regualr looking car) and get sm0ked. Raz_Kaz 07-06-2004, 11:44 AM Depending on yuor size wallet, of course you can make it fast. And the definition of fast varies from person to person, I would suggest opsting this in the Stratus forum for more info. Its not nesessarily true that manula cars are faster than automatics because they go through a torque convertor RACER D12 07-06-2004, 01:37 PM Your better off looking for another car if you want to be fast. And yes for the most part manuals are faster...unless you have a F1 paddle shift transmission. landyacht 07-06-2004, 02:29 PM 2 stock cars, no mods with exact same equipment from factory. One manual, one automatic. I can't think of a scenario like that where the auto will be faster. The stick is faster cuz you have more gears and can control the rev range a bit better, so you accelerate faster. Won't change the top end in these instances though. As far as making your car go fast, absolutely! It just depends on what you want it to do, and if you have the money to do it. Considering the car you have, i'm inclined to agree with RACERD12 in that a new car would be better. That's just my :2cents: though, look at what i drive! SpaceManSpiff 07-06-2004, 04:57 PM It depends. If you're rich, you can make any car fast. You can tae that stratus, stick a Hemi in it, and run 12s. Really, though, it's cheaper and more effective to start out with a better platform. There are many that work well, but I won't start recomending them untill I know your budget and expertise with cars. In terms of auto vs stick, sticks are usually better. If you have shitloads of torque (like 500+ lb ft) or are bracket racing, then you'll usually do better with an auto, but it's not nearly as much fun. Unless you're driving a 9 second Supra, stick with a manual. christophv 07-06-2004, 06:12 PM there are actually guys here in germany who build paddles for the Supra auto so it's a manual-automatic-bastard :grinno: the kit's just 50€, so it's fun... imho, Manual > Auto but Semi-Automatic DSG > Manual (only in very expensive cars) And even 9s or 8s cars are shifted manually (it's more fun too) cu lamehonda 07-06-2004, 06:16 PM no a stock stratus cannot be fast. duplox 07-06-2004, 06:38 PM Top fuel dragsters are manual... clutch for launch, clutchless afterwards... its kinda like those tiptronic auto trans, where you just pull the shifter down and let it back up to shift. Just bang it down 5 times and you're doin 300mph in under 5 seconds... sweet. Layla's Keeper 07-06-2004, 11:30 PM Well, if you can find the parts, the Dodge Stratus was the dominant car in the short lived NATCC (North American Touring Car Championship) thanks to a heady factory effort. There's a lot of life in that V6, and the chassis is as fundamentally sound as an Accord or a Volvo 850. However, the aftermarket is very limited unless you can find copies of the factory NATCC parts which will undoubtedly be radically expensive. bclipse 07-07-2004, 02:44 PM a dodge stratus can be quick but ur gonna need some deep pockets. one thing u could do is, if u dont already, get a 2.4L and do a 5spd tranny swap off a 2.0L stratus, neon, or avenger with a PT turbo clutch. after that, u could go turbo with the turbo kit for 2.4L stratus's off of dreamspeed2.com. u would have to call and ask for Rich. the kit says that u can get 300 to 350 whp. that would prolly be the cheapest way to get fast in a stratus. the kit runs about 3200 and thats without an intercooler or bottom end parts. bottom ends run about 1100 bucks, plus the turbo kit, plus a fuel management and time on a dyno. ur maybe lookin at 5500 to 6000 to make ur car quick. good luck and u might want to check out stratusphere.us to get more info if u'd like. xAUTOxRACERx 07-07-2004, 05:30 PM Yes making a car fast ususally depends on the size of your wallet.
