Angry Brakes grind

I have a 1998 LE with 58K. Front brakes are making an awful grinding sound when pressed hard. Have had pads checked by respected shop who insist there's still 60% lining left. (Have had annoying squeak since brand new and was told by dealer it was 'normal.')

Aside from replacing rotors and pads to see if the problem goes away, are there any other thoughts?

Thanks!
Valenti
