clunking in rear cherokeelgnickee 07-01-2004, 01:33 PM hello-another question- I have a 01 cherokee that when coming to a complete stop, it almost feels like the vehicle is jerking back. When i take off, it feels like something is releasing and clunking at the same time. any ideas? Axle? Diff? Rear brakes-they were just done and adjusted HELP rctrex 07-10-2004, 11:03 PM I had the same problem on my 1998 cherokee a couple of years ago. I took had a mechanic look at it and the transmission mount was loose. He tightened it and no problems since. avmx 07-12-2004, 11:17 PM I own a 97 cherokee sport which I purchased one year ago and immediately noticed the "clunking". During the emmissions inspection the jeep would not stop when the brakes were applied (the jeep is placed on a dyno for the inspection in NYS). I replaced the rear shoes, and the problem continued, replaced the proportioning valve, and nothing. Replaced both wheel cylinders, nothing. Finally replaced the master cylinder and the problem stopped...for a while, then the problem returned. I did notice while replacing the front brake pads that when I collapsed the calipers the problem disappeared. But guess what the problem seems to be coming back. I hear the clunking but not as strong. Anybody have any suggestions?? Possibly more bleeding necessary?? Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
