1998 Dodge RAM 1500 4 x 4 excessive front brake weardhendrickson80 06-30-2004, 07:39 AM The front disc brakes are wearing out within 5,000 miles on my 1998 Dodge Ram 4 x 4 pickup, especially on the passenger side. You can see the brake dust all over the aluminum wheel on the outside of the vehicle. I have replaced the calipers with rebuilt ones, but that didn't help. I bought this truck 8 months ago and have replaced the front brakes 3 times! Help! snowplowman 12-30-2004, 12:53 AM It sounds like you have a (rubber) brake hose collapesing. The truck is seven years old and I would bet that the brake hoses are also. The problem (could be) when you apply brake pressure its ok, BUT when you release the pressure the inside of the hose collapses. That would allow brakes to be partialy on and wearing out that brake. Make sure you buy the correct hose, they make several. Call Dodge with VIN to find out about anti lock brakes, rear only?, or all 4?. Advance Auto. I just did my 95 so we shall see. Good Luck. BleedDodge 12-30-2004, 02:14 AM It's like the piston is stuck engaged. Or too many brakestands. snowplowman 12-30-2004, 11:15 AM Brakestands? Brake dust is common on any front rotors, brake pad dust has to go somewhere. I think you understand, piston is stuck engaged, stuck partialy on. Front brakes should wear out faster than rear because 75% of braking is by the front end and 25% is by the rear (in general). But by no way 3 brake jobs in 8 months.I suspect brake (hose) line at the right front. I would change both left and right (hoses) lines at the same time. Then bleed brakes again. I would also change both rotors with NEW (not resurfaces) ones if they are getting thin, they are not to expensive, and easy to replace. That way you should get back FULL braking and have less brake travel also.
