94 Corolla Air Bag Removal

Anyone have any ideas or advice on how to do this? I need to remove to active units and transplant them to a car that had them blown already

You can't - you need special tools to do it.

Re: 94 Corolla Air Bag Removal

Funny thing, since posting this i have found all is needed is a set of torx. Drain the remaining voltage out of the system so as to prevent accidental firing of the bag. The bags are emovable and reinstallable. Make sure that the air bag sensors haven't been triggered. At least thats what the dealership, collision shop and dealer repair guides say. anyone knwo anything more about this?

I wouldnt suggest it. If you disconnect everything you think is power from an airbag, it can still go off. The airbag has its own powersupply. If you were to successfully disconnect even that, the airbag will most likely go off because its controller will assume a huge accident and deploy itself.

YOu could remove it, but you would have to remove everything, even the controller and aux power supply. Its a pain in the ass, and most likely the bag will go off. Best bet, just replace the steering wheel and passenger airbag cover. YOu could convert the passenger side cavity to be a storage unit. Besides, seatbelts will save your life before an airbag would.

Re: 94 Corolla Air Bag Removal

Well the "special tool" was a t12 torx driver. After using that to remove the airbags i suceesfully transplanted them into the other corolla. The airbags don't carry their own power pack. Otherwise you would see deployment in old models when the battery failed. They are directly tied to the sensors located in the car, which need the battery. Thats why in a park collision you don't see airbag deployment. The bags do hold some residual energy, which is why you need to make sure to fully discharge the system. Or at least pull the battery 12 hours before doing work. To be honest you probaly only need 30 minutes or an hour to start work. But better safe than sorry. The bag was only designed to carry residual energy in case of a power cut during a collision. I kind of knew it would be easy. Afterall cars get stolen for thier air bags all the time. And if a penny criminal can do it. A half ass auto mechanic should be able to do it. I would recommend however that when working on them never put your head next to the bag in case it does deploy.

Any questions on how to do this job. email me!

Re: 94 Corolla Air Bag Removal

How would you explain when a battery goes completely dead then? the airbag has a compacitor that holds a rsidual charge but not for long periods of time. It isn't its own seperate battery. While the charge is explosive when ignited it is a stable charge. Thats why you can ship them across the country.

YOu know, your right dude, I dont know a damn thing about airbags. COntinue to fuck around with them. Im not going to argue with them. In my shop, we have idiots come in because they tried plugging LEDs into the airbags power cable. The airbags go off, and some of these idiots wind up with a fucked up car, and busted noses. There is a separate power supply, that is why they DONT go off when the battery is drained. Im not going to argue about your airbags anymore.

Re: 94 Corolla Air Bag Removal

Please do yourself the favor and attend the automotive school. Having a seperate battery on an airbag? so in ten tears when that battery finally dies the bag will just explode? Or better yet in extreme north when the battery freezes it will explode. Very accurate. also they are explosives that are so unstable they could explode at any minute.

Hey, you want to debate this till I die, dont you. Take a look at other threads. I know what Im talking about. They are normally stable, but if your not trained in them, then your playing with fire. Thats just facts I know. you go under your dash and screw with the yellow wire for the airbag. Its been known to happen, and Ive seen it.
