Question 93 Corolla Wagon Thermostat Location ? ? ?

My corolla wagon is running cold in the summer so it is time to replace the Thermostat. I was fortunate enough to have the water pump replace last summer but during the instal the mechanic must have left some type of debre in the cooling system and it found its way into the Therostat sealing septum.

Now the big question: Where the hell is thermostat located on this engine. Both my US and Italian autos place the Thermostat at the opposite end of the top feeder hose to the radiator however I look down and find this hose connects directly to the engine without any type of metal fitting that would allow a Thermostat to be placed in the line.

What am I missing? There is a cluster of fittings on the right hand side of the head just below the electronic ignition distributor however that also looks too small to fit a thermstat in there. Any help would be appreciated.
