hi, i have just bought a '88 635 and noticed that just before I start the car the brake pedal can be pushed to the floor - when the car is going the brakes seem really good - anyone got any clues ?

What you are reporting is normal.

There is a brake accumilator that will retain a source of pressure for about one hour, that will allow the brakes to be used 13 times.
