Your ignition lock cylinder is going out. This is a common issue with the N body GM cars (Malibu's, Alero's, G.A.'s). I used to have a Malibu and I had the same issue. Unfortunately, this repair is a bit expensive at the stealership. If they quote you over $400, run screaming to the next GM dealer and get another estimate. I have heard of some dealers trying to get $650 for this repair.

I had the same problem. Jeremy is right. If it wont start you can also put your key on the on position for about 7 to 10 minutes. When the security light goes out it will start. Hope this helps.

dealership gave me an estimate of 158.98$ for the lock cylinder and then 88$ for 1.6hrs labor. You also don't have to have the key in the ignition to reset the security light, mine does it in 10 mins without it. The security light also comes on for me while driving so i'm assuming we have the same problem.
