Knock sensor on 2002 Silverado?

I took my truck into be diagnosed and was told I had to replace the knock sensor. I've looked for it and can not locate it. Does anyone know where it is on a 2002 model. If so how do I install it?

It is usually below the the cylinder head on the passenger side towards the back of the engine. It has a white single mushroom shaped connector.

What exactly does that knock sensor do? Does it have anything to do with detonation??

Yeah it controls detonation by working with the 02 sensors and timing to keep the engine from detonating. Detonation can ruin an engine in short order.

It acts as a tiny microphone to detect detonation in the cylinder. The ECM sends out a high frequency signal and checks it for interference, which would indicate knock.

Re: Knock sensor on 2002 Silverado?

yolyvera,

What problem did you have diagnosed, and did you take it to a dealer?

I took my '01 to a couple dealers 3-4 times during warranty, and each time I told them it was pinging. I always got some reply like "normal noises" or "some ping is normal" even though I described a constant, heavy knock at high revs that only went away when I let off the throttle. I looked at a manual recently and saw the knock sensors are under the intake, and it suddenly made sense. That ping was normal because they didn't want all the trouble of pulling the intake to replace sensors under warranty. I'll bet a dealership would diagnose the problem and quote me a price right off, now that my warranty is up.

Vortec327 is right. The intake has to come off and the knock sensors are under it. The procedure for getting them out is outlined in any good shop manual. It can definitly be done at home if you have the tools. Good luck!

The knock sensors are under the intake maifold on those engines.
There is a GM technical bulletin regarding some spark knock issues that are caused by the rear knock sensor and water intrusion.
When replacing a knock sensor, torque to 14 ft/lbs......

I want to thank everyone for their information on this. Where can I read this bulletin? I have an extended warranty on my truck. Do you think it's best I just take it in and see if it's covered. I'm beginning to think I may not have the tools for this kind of job. Someone else said it was complicated.

Well, I took my truck in to be diagnosed because the check engine light came on. I had no idea what the problem could be. I was getting bad gas mileage too. It shot back knock sensor. I haven't taken it to a dealer just yet. I was told by the auto parts store that it was easy to repair. I'm finding that it isn't all that easy.

Re: Knock sensor on 2002 Silverado?

Here is the bulletin

Bulletin No.: 02-06-04-023A

Date: June, 2002

TECHNICAL

Subject:
Audible Spark Knock (Detonation), MIL Illuminated, DTC P0332 Set (Replace Rear Bank Knock Sensor and RTV Area Around Sensor)

Models:
1998-2002 Chevrolet Camaro, Corvette
1998-2002 Pontiac Firebird
with 5.7L Engine (VIN G - RPO LS1)
1999-2002 Chevrolet Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe
2002 Chevrolet Avalance
1999-2002 GMC Sierra, Yukon, Yukon XL
2002 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade EXT
with 4.8L, 5.3L or 6.0L Engine
(VINs V, T, Z, N, U - RPOS LR4, LM7, L59, L09, L04)

This bulletin is being revised to add Cadillac Escalade and Cadillac Escalade EXT to the Models. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 02-06-04-023 (Section 6 - Engine/Propulsion System).

Condition

Some customers may comment on a mild to severe engine ping (commonly referred to as spark knock), usually worse during acceleration and/or an illuminated MIL. Upon investigation, the technician may find DTC P0332 set.

Cause

This condition may be the result of corrosion of the rear bank knock sensor due to water intrusion into the sensor cavity. This condition is more apparent on vehicles in which customers frequently wash the engine compartment.

Correction

Replace the rear bank knock sensor and build a dam (wall) around the sensor using RTV to divert water away from the sensor. Use the procedure and part number listed.

1. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to the Intake Manifold Replacement procedure in the Engine Controls sub-section of the appropriate Service Manual.

2. Remove the wiring harness assembly from the knock sensor.

3. Remove the rear bank knock sensor.

4. Install the new rear bank knock sensor.

Tighten

Tighten the knock sensor to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).

5. Install the wiring harness assembly to the knock sensor.

6. Apply a bead of RTV silicone sealant approximately 9 mm (3/8 in) wide and 6 mm (1/4 in) high along the outside edge of the ridge on the engine block valley cover around the rear bank knock sensor. DO NOT form a complete circle. Leave the rear section open as shown.

7. From the underside of the intake manifold, completely remove the rear intake manifold seal (foam material).

8. Install the intake manifold. Refer to the Intake Manifold Replacement procedure in the Engine Controls sub-section of the appropriate Service Manual.
