Power antenna 1986 Caprice ClassicRockyZ56 06-23-2004, 02:50 AM I'm a proud owner of a 1986 Landau. About 2 years ago the power antenna decided that it was tired of going up and down. The motor started whirring and stayed up. I did the only thing I could think of and disconnected the juice to the antenna motor. The antenna worked well until some clown decided to bend my antenna at a 45 degree angle. (Arrggh!)While bending it back it split and cracked. So now I have the antenna at half its workable length so as not to loose it completely. I don't really want to use an old hanger, you know? Aesthetically, well... its not the best looking. It looks a lot cleaner when its hidden. I have looked at the car and can find no easy way to replace it. Chevy will do it for about $300.00. The antenna only costs about $70.00. I would love to tackle this to make the car a little more presentable. Some friends have recommended using one of the black rubber antennas, but I'm a little resistant to this. Any ideas? Is there an easy way to access to replace? (It appears that you have to remove the fender or go through the fender well to do it and putting the fender back may be harder than it looks.) CAPRICEONE 06-23-2004, 11:04 PM Hi Rocky! I also have an '86 Landau Coupe (maroon) and have just replaced the power antenna! Like you, I didn't want something mickey mouse and prefer having all the toys working. You can access the unit by removing the rear lower fender bolt (goes up from below) and four wheelwell bolts. The antenna bracket bolt goes in from the door jamb. Pull out the lower fender as far as possible and insert a block of wood to hold it. Don't let it slip while your arms in there! Remove the top nut on the fender and it'll drop out. BTW, I got my replacement by a bit of luck. A '90 parts car donated it along with a bunch of other stuff. Best hundred I ever spent! Jim ladymech62 06-25-2004, 05:13 PM You can, if you want to tackle it, get an antenna kit and rebuild it. It is a lot more work but a bit cheaper . . . RockyZ56 06-25-2004, 10:25 PM Thanks for the replies. I appreciate your ideas. I think I'll try going with a new antenna and some elbow grease on the fender.
