Snobrdrblinkchik 06-21-2004, 03:00 AM 87...using anything higher on a NA tacoma is wasting money...if you're boosted or running a higher compression, then you gotta use premium edj0527 06-21-2004, 02:19 PM What grade of gas is everybody using for thier V6 tacoma? 87, went the expnsive route and Gained nothing. I dont have any knocks or Pings on the low grade so thats what I stick with. 2002 Tacoma Prerunner. naderattar 06-21-2004, 02:35 PM What grade of gas is everybody using for thier V6 tacoma? I have tried 87, 89 and premium. Although I have not noticed any pings/knocks using the lower grades, I have noticed that the engine runs slightly smoother with slightly better gas mileage with premium gas. To make the final and detailed call, one would have to run the engine in a lab with a DYNO that is controlled through a computer that changes the load pattern randomely to simulate a close to real life scenario and then run it for a longer period, while observing the engine vitals. Hope thjis helps. dfskinner 06-21-2004, 04:27 PM I'm running 93 in every 3rd Fill-up, I'm hoping it's helping to keep the fuel system somewhat clean. I'm filling up about 3 times a week, so I usually buy the 87 in the place where it's expensive (2.01 per gallon, Washington DC), and the 93 where it's running about 1.91 a gallon, and then the 3rd tank is usually around 1.81-1.87 in Va Beach. Drive 250 miles on Sunday and Thursday every week. TGates81 08-05-2004, 10:04 PM higher octane fuels are strickly for high compression racing type vehicles only. Any reduction in knocking would mean it was running to hot - like too hot plugs. Brian R. 08-06-2004, 10:44 AM Use the lowest octane gasoline that gives you the best gas mileage. If you are running lower octane gas than is optimum for your engine, you will loose gas mileage because of the retarded ignition timing. All engines are not created equal as far as octane requirements go. Keep track of your mileage with different grades of gasoline and make your own decision. If economy is your major concern, balance any loss of gas mileage with 87 octane (if you see any such loss) with the decrease in cost of the gas. If you want the best power from your engine, use the gas grade that gives you the best mileage (most advanced ignition timing). Beyond that, there is no gain from higher octane. tacoma man. 08-06-2004, 11:29 PM when i run 93 octane in my tacoma i can get an extra day out of a tank of gas. texas_tacoma04 08-11-2004, 07:54 PM With 91 octane (middle grade) I get 16.7 mpg. With the 93 oct I get 17.5. City driving with AC on low, 2WD prerunner Brian R. 08-11-2004, 10:56 PM texas_tacoma04 - Doesn't sound like enough difference to make using 93 octane worth while. If there is a difference in power, that's another story. texas_tacoma04 08-14-2004, 08:26 AM Brian R - Yes, you are right. I'll probably stay with the 91 oct, not enough difference in mileage or power. Is anyone using (gasp) 87 oct? Robert Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
