You should be using 93 octane. I know Celica GT-S's require this so I know the SpecV should also.

Deffinetly consult your owners manual on the correct octane gas you should be using..But if you are still into the break in period you might want to wait and see cause a few people have noticed an increase in mileage after the break in period was done....I noticed that in my SE....

Damn 93 octane,,,that's gotta be a killing on fill up day:D
I'm kinda glad that I only need to use 89 octane....

In most states I would have to agree. But I'm stationed in Louisiana Barksdale Air Force Base, the prices are not that bad here.:alien:

The dealer told me that the car will take regular. (87 octane) What gas you put in should be based on the car compression ratio. Higher octanes are for higher compression ratios. If your octane is too low the fuel will ignite prematurely and you get knocking. I found the compression ratio is 9.5:1 for the Spec V through Sport Compact Car Magazine. I'd say you can go on regular for about 8-9:1 compression ratios. 10 and higher you probably want to use premium. Consider the Sepc V is a non aspirated engine, I don't think it needs premium. My manual says 91 octane. I use 89 and my car runs fine. I have yet to calculate fuel economy.

Manual says 91 octane. I am sure that the care will run ok on 89 if you want to save a few cents. Also, elevation has something to do with it. For every 2500 feet above sea level, supposedly you can drop 1 octane level.

As far as efficiency... I have not been very happy with my Spec V. I was expecting to get 26 - 28 city, and 31 - 34 highway. I have been getting about 25 city, and 28 highway. I did get over 30 one time.
I am sure I have a bit of a heavy foot (If I didn't there would be no point in owning a SER), so I could probably improve a bit just by backing off the accelerator.

I would use the higher quality gas even if we weren't instructed too. It is cleaner and I think better for the engine. Some engines get detonation and run poorly on too high octane, but not our cars.

My car seems okay on gas. I use 93 octane like instructed. And to fill it up is about 12 or 14 dollars.

I use 91 octane cause thats the best we have in Cali. I was getting better gas mileage and now it's just horrible. I get like 20 miles to the gallon. I am really dissapointed. I takes $20 each fill up. It's really hurting my check book.

I calculate my gas milage every tank. I am averaging 26 mpg. I also use my ac everyday, and am constantly flooring it! I got it up to 28 mpg once, and that was after a trip to Orance county and back, and I set the cc to 75 both ways.

The small gas tank doesn't help us either.

In Connecticut, Sunoco sells 94 octane. I believe that is the highest octane sold by a chain gas stations. I've heard of some select stations from Unocal 76 selling 100. I think in Los Angeles most stations sell 92. I prefer to buy Cheveron with Techroline. I probably would never put Arco in the car. It's cheap low octane fuel that is boosted with chemical additives.

If the gas is hurting your wallet, you may find some savings in using credit cards to pay. Some gas station cards, like offer rebates on gas for using their credit cards to buy. Sunoco offers 4%. Many commercial credit cards can accumulate bonuses, rewards, or rebates using them. Min you they won't be much, 1-4% but they add up in the long run.

i get really bad gas mileage as well. and i use 93 octane. fill up is about 18 bux. if i drove the car perfect then i'd get good mileage, but its hard to do perfect shifts and not get on it. and if you get on it, that thing dumps gas like crazy.

i traded in my 97 nissan xe regular cab 4x4 with 33'' bridgestones and a 4'' trailmaster lift on it. that only had a 14 gallon fuel tank..now THAT thing sucked down gas...about 180 miles on a full tank of regular. so to me the spec is a gift from God!

I am going to experiment w/my next few tanks of gas. I heard on an advert that the big 3 use Chevron gas to pass emissions, and set mpg results. I have been using Arco, but they pissed me off, so I will try Chevron, Shell, and whatever else big name gas I can find. I'll let you know what I come up with.

So far, I have been ave'ing 26 mpg.
