98 4Runner SR5 V6 3.4L Cooling Fan

Hello!

I have just recently purchased a 98 4Runner SR5 (3.4L V6). When I begin to accelerate from a stop, it sounds like the fan is turning for all it's worth, regardless of whether the engine it hot or cold. Sounds like a jet plane taxiing down the runway.

Is this normal for the 4Runner? My 92 Camry does the same thing sometimes (really hot weather), but it's fan is not mounted to the crankshaft.

It has been pretty warm here in Chattanooga lately (mid 90's, and humidity is keeping pace :uhoh: ) Oh, and I did go through a pretty serious mud puddle which rendered a spotless engine compartment considerably less so. Related?

Anything I can check? Anything to worry about? The temp gauge goes up to the middle and stays there. The vehicle runs like a dream!

Thanks!

When the engine is cold, let it idle for 1 min and shut it off. If you immediately lift the hood and turn the fan, it should free-wheel with little effort. If it doesn't there is something wrong and you probably need to replace it. If it is very dirty, clean it before you make a decision.
