check engine lightcoolweb 06-14-2004, 09:04 AM My check engine light came on yesterday while i was driving. I recently changed my battery but i really don;t think this will cause this problem. Is there a way to check the trouble code without a scan tool device??? Or where can i check the code??? Please help me out. Thanks. craftyhonda 06-14-2004, 05:20 PM You're SOL -- sorry! That's why dealerships get to charge a hundred bucks for a "diagnostic fee." You can find an inexpensive ODB2 scanner, and then purchase a Chilton's on your car to reference the code, or you can spend the extra 300 and get a scanner that references the codes and tells you what they mean all in one. As far as the battery goes, it shouldn't cause the check engine light to come on. Well, unless you did something wrong and shorted out something electrical, I suppose... I do know that on my accord (which I think applies to all 6th Gen accords), if the gas cap isn't on tight, the light will come on. Try that first, I guess. Good luck! HONDA_99 06-14-2004, 11:13 PM AutoZone can scan ECU for trouble codes for free. then come back and tell what code(s) you got and i will tell what to do to get rid of it. coolweb 06-15-2004, 12:35 AM Thanks for all your help. I went to Autozone and they told me that my EGR valve is the problem. I called up several local auto parts stores and they want over $250 for the valve. Is there any other place that sell this for a cheaper price?? Thanks. HONDA_99 06-15-2004, 08:24 AM do you know what trouble code it was? i'm asking because there are two codes associated with EGR; P0401 - EGR insufficient flow P1491 - Insufficient EGR valve lift you can get EGR kit at your local honda dealership for about $70, just ask for EGR kit. kit contains EGR valve, 10mm stainless steel tube and gasket. and i will try to find TSB on EGR and i'll post it later today. HONDA_99 06-15-2004, 08:34 AM look for jim-rock reply in here ->EGR TSB (http://www.v6performance.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10338) coolweb 06-17-2004, 09:16 PM Thanks alot for all your help Honda99.
