Engine cranks but not start

My 96 2500 (350 vortex) was running fine when I left on vacation, returning 2 weeks later, it cranked, but would not start. With starting fluid, it sputters, but still does not start. I have replaced the fuel filter and spark plugs. I hear the fuel pump when ignition turned on. I'm considering replacing fuel pressure regulator next. We had tons of rain while the truck sat for two weeks. Anyone have a handle on this problem?

Re: Engine cranks but not start

Do a fuel pressure test key on, engine off. The pressure should get to 60-66psi and hold there. If the pressure drops after pump shuts off, crimp a hose section of return line and pressure test again, if it doesn't drop you need a new regulator.

Question water problem

I'm also having the same problem, fuel pressure perfect....65 lbs steady...

rained buckets here yesterday and went to start truck at no avail...when battery is disconnected and reconnected after @30 seconds truck will restart and die within 2-3 seconds... Replaced cap and rotor...just because it was old and figured the water/humidity could have possibly damaged it....same problem. Dumped fuel down intake and truck fired right up but would not idle....dumped more fuel down throat, and held throttle slightly open, fired again and ran until I let my foot off the throttle.....but had no throttle response. I strongly suspect that the POS CSFI is taking a poop....or something else (ignition module)? anyone else have a similar problem? Please help before we start pulling this POS intake apart in favor of a GEN IV dfi

Hey bud, I think you might have a cracked ignition module. You'll just have to replace it, I had the same thing happen in a van I owned. It died one day when it got really cold, and wouldn't start. when it did start, it only lasted a few seconds. good luck.

Does the security light come on and flash?
you may be having a security issue..especially with the start and stall after 2-3 seconds

Re: Re: Engine cranks but not start

Sorry. I never replied back on this problem. Following Jeremy's advice I checked the fuel pressure and it was 46 psi, so I dropped the gas tank and replaced the fuel pump and strainer. It now runs like a charm.

Prior to replacing the fuel pump, where you getting any fuel out of your injectors? If not, I assume you didn't have enough fuel pressue to open the diaphram in the fuel regulator. My problem is that I'm not getting fuel out of the injectors, but I have fuel pressure at the inlet connection. I have not checked the pressure though.
