1997 camry manual transmission

My 1997 camry CE transmission is very notchy, especially when shifting to first gear. Is there any fix for this? Linkage adjustment? Is this common?

some resistance to going into gear, you HAVE to pause in neutral to shift smoothly at all, basically it does this when shifting into first at anything but a dead stop. you have to trying putting it in first, then hold it for a second, then push again. in other words, not like a worn in bmw.

Clutch wear, or adjustment?
Once thought I needed a new transmission, shifting got so difficult - turned out the clutch had become so old and worn, one of the springs in the clutch plate popped out, blocking complete disengagement. Doesn't sound like this is your problem, but I'd check the clutch for proper operation.
