Acceleration/Power Loss problem

1990 Camry DX 5sp manual 4cyl. 186000mi
When driving this car, everything runs great except that when pressing on the gas at any time in any gear, the engine revs up to about 3000-4000 RPMs. It gets gas to the engine just fine, but as stated, when pressing on the gas it just revs up instead of going faster. If I am very sensitive and light on the gas pedal, it will lessen the height of RPMs that it revs up to, but the problem is always there. Not sure what to make of this... Timing belt was replaced around 140000mi and driven to VA from Washington (state). Only has had 20000 miles put on it in the past two years. Any suggestions??

Replace the clutch. Do it soon, it won't last much longer. Then you'll be stranded.

Re: Acceleration/Power Loss problem

the clutch feels fine. it shifts with no problems. when i've had another clutch go out, i could tell a significant difference in the feel of the clutch. the engine will stall when trying to pull out in 5th gear. if the clutch was bad, it wouldn't stall correct?

No, a worn out clutch won't lock up any more. The lining is too thin to be compressed tightly between the pressure plate and the flywheel.

There are other problems a clutch mechanism can have. Yours appears to be worn out.
