98 GC Sport, rear wheel bearing troublemieth 06-02-2004, 09:25 AM My 98 GC sport developed a sound coming from the right rear wheel. I took off the drum and the brakes are fine, and it seems as though the wheel bearing is shot as there is some wobble to it. I can't figure out how to remove the bearing. I noticed on the backside behind the encoder wheel for the speed sensor there is a large nut. If I knew how to remove this encoder wheel I can access the nut and might be able to move forward with the repair. I have looked for set screws, etc and have even tried rotating it just in case it's threaded on, but stopped for fear of breaking something. Does anybody out there know how to remove the speed sensor encoder wheel? chevy406 06-02-2004, 10:17 AM there is 4 bolts from the back side that hold the wheel bearing asmable to the rear axle the wheel speed senor comes off with the wheel bearing mieth 06-02-2004, 01:54 PM Thanks for the speedy reply. I removed those bolts and couldn't get the bearing assembly to come out. I supposed it's rusted on. I used a large hammer and a cold chisel to try and break it free, but wasn't successful. Perhaps I'll spray it liberally with liquid wrench and let it sit a while. Should I maybe heat it with a torch? mieth 06-06-2004, 11:40 PM I bought the new bearing assy for $105 and installed it myself. The old assy was pretty well corroded on and I had to use a cold chisel and sledge hammer to rotate the unit to break it free. Thanks Chevy406 for your advice!!!
