How many quarts of A/T Fluid in 99 Blazer?

My Chilton's Manual says 11 pts. That's 5.5 quarts right? Except that the dipstick is indicating I've got too much.

Any idea how this might result in the loss of 1st gear? I'm not hearing, feeling, or smelling any grinding or tranny slippage. It's just as if 1st gear was never there...
