Upper Beams Won't Stay On

I have a '95 Grand Am. With the headlights ON, the upper beam steering column lever only flashes the upper beams. The upper beams do not stay on. It's the same response as though the headlights were not turned on. My thoughts are that there's a relay that needs to be replaced. Any suggestions? Thanks.

On my '93, its hard for me to turn mine on. I have to pull it back hard, and sometimes a couple times before it clicks for them to stay on.

Re: Re: Upper Beams Won't Stay On

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

The User manual only mentioned that the lever would flash the upper beams when the headlights were off, and make them stay on when the headlights were on. No mention of clicking into position, but it makes sence.

Re: Upper Beams Won't Stay On

you're headlight switch is going bad, the whole stalk will need to be replaced eventually, you can pick a new switch up for about 120 or go to the junkyard to get it.

I had the same thing happen in my 92, it finally got to the point where the actuazl low beams wouln't go on at all and the high beams wouln't stay on, so I had to drive around holding the stalk back, just to have some light.

my 95 is the same way...I sometimes hafta put both hands on the lever and put one leg on the dash then pull as hard as i can to get the high beams on and then off again...well not quite that bad but you get the point

Re: Upper Beams Won't Stay On

go to autozone you can get the whole assembly with cruise for $70.00, the ones in the junkyard belong in the junkyard- also you don't need to remove the steering wheel to replace it like the book tells you

Re: Re: Upper Beams Won't Stay On

You guys are great... it was the switch. Just had to pull harder, almost to the point that it was going to break off. I't felt like it was never used by the previous owner. The switch also works the Cruise Control. Hopefully I'll be able to replace it without setting off the airbag. Thanks again.
