Explorer '96 V8 "Stutters"

I've got a 96 V8 and when I cruise along everything is fine. Then when I let up on the gas, a in going down a long hill, the engine will "cut out" and then will come on again. This happens in cruise control as well as when I drive with the pedal. I just changed the plugs an fuel filter. The car has 115K miles on it. Any ideas?

Re: Explorer '96 V8 "Stutters"

Just to clarify, the engine "cuts out" (as in completely shuts down, tach goes to zero) and then restarts on its own??

How long does it usually stay off ?

I have a 97 V8 and experience the same thing when low on gas. When
I say low on gas I mean a gallon or two.

It cuts out for a second or two - just enough to scare the heck out of me.
