Re: temp. guage problems
Under normal driving conditions, meaning with air flowing through the radiator, the thermostat will keep the engine temp between 185 and 200 F. If sitting still, the temp will rise to above 220 before the fans kick in. The guage has a wide sweep area for the normal temps, so 220 will read rather high on the guage.
GM put the red where it is for a reason. We can't think the guage should be like the old fashioned ones that read exactly with numbers. In fact, you should only have two numbers on your guage, at the top and bottom.
If you do go into the red, which isn't likely, then there is an obvious problem which should be addressed.
The fans automatically come on with the AC to keep the condensor cool.
