Car Stalls Without noticeCUTLASS870 05-07-2004, 12:13 AM 1987 Fuel Injected 3.8L V-6 cutlass ciera 117,000 KM The problem: When driving the engine cuts out on me and the check engine light comes on. I pull over and start the car immediatly without any problems, then check engine light goes off. It's done this before but now it's happening alot.So far i changed the fuel filter and thought it corrected the problem but its begining to happen more often,When the car is running it doesn't run rough or anything.Does anyone have any ideas on where to start? It happens while driving or at a stop light. Slade901 05-07-2004, 11:03 AM I would start by letting the car at IDLE for about 15 minutes. See if it cuts out. The radiator fan should kick in within that time frame. Some hidden problem is the fuel pump relay that is overheating and recovers once it cools down even for a few seconds (engine shutdown). Try swapping it a known good identical relay. Some vehicles has two radiator fan relay and just swap the secondary fan relay to the fuel pump relay. Check the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKPS) wire and make sure it is not rubbing on the engine block. Could be ignition module overheating and regaining back when the engine had shut down. BTW, just make sure all the battery heavy gauge wires are clean and tightened up good. Follow and trace each positive and negative wires. CUTLASS870 05-09-2004, 10:15 PM I used a bottle of Valvoline Max Life Fuel System Cleaner and drove the car for a few days and car hasnot died yet i bought a bottle of cleaner because my car hasn't died out this bad i noticed ever since i fill up @ AM/PM my car has been dieing out alot I dunno maybe the gas is waterd down but I hoped I fixed the problem thanks, i guess its wait and see. CUTLASS870 05-15-2004, 06:17 PM OK the car started to stall again today this really sucks before I spend alot of money on sensors and stuff is it possible it could be the FueL pump itself?what are the symptoms of a fuel pump going bad?If so where is the pump located on 3.8, in tank? Thanks CUTLASS870 05-18-2004, 02:12 PM Ok I took it to a mechanic the yesterday and he said that its probaly the crankshaft position sensor or ignition module it said with these types of problems its hard to tell, He said most likely its the crankshaft position sensor. So has anyone ever changed one of these and did it fix the problem?
