I have a 2002 with 5 speed AUTO, 4 wheel drive, 4.0 L engine. It gets about 18 MPG on the highway and 17 around the outside of town/ country. Running at 1900 RPM at 65 mph i would have expected better. How do you do, and has anyone had success in different air cleaner, muffler, chip etc???

I'm in worse shape than that. I just bought the same car a month ago. It's got 35,000 miles on it. The airfilter and tire pressure is good, and I'm only seeing 16 mpg on the highway and 14.2 in the city. I'm considering doing a tune-up, but am wondering if maybe the digital display is wrong. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm equally confused.

Well I have both of you beat. I am getting 10 miles per gallon. This sucks. I want to know how to correct this. I have checked a few different things but it all seems to be ok.

'97 Explorer XLT, 5.0 V8, 110,000 miles, AWD, 4 door. Without the K&N air filter I was getting 11 miles to the gallon anywhere I drove, city or highway, in the gas or not. With the air filter upgrade I get 12 in the city laying into it and 13-14 taking it very easy. On the highway I get 15 with cruise control at 80 MPH. (MT is 75 MPH)

'96 XLT 5.0l w/ 104,000 miles, 31" BFG All-Terrains, K&N, and custom dual exhausts. Having never really grown up, I generally run the engine up between 3 grand and 3,500 before I shift ("manual override" on the column). That generally gives me around 14 mpg overall, but the sound is worth it! :naughty: Actual mileage is probably a little higher, since the speedo is not readusted for the larger tires. Even so, that would still only be around 15.
