Car Alarm? Keyless Entry?
I puchased a '96 Camry from a dealership a few years ago. Recently, I've had problems with my key working in the driver side door. It may be becuase the key is slightly worn or a problem with the lock. Either way, I decided I'd rather go with keyless entry.
I was looking around my car and found a bullhorn for a car alarm system under the hood. I don't want to install a new system if there is already one there. Where should I look to see if there is more of the system there or if just the bullhorn remains? How would I know if keyless entry is already installed?

If it is a Toyota system, there should be a control unit under the drivers seat. It's a black box with a few electrical connectors plugged into it.
To activate the remote, turn the key on and have all door switches closed, press that green button on the control unit, and wait about 5 seconds..... press the button on the remote. You'll hear a beep, and you are done.

If the siren looks aftermarket, just trace where the wires go. That's what I do when a dealer wants me to find things out for them.

Re: Car Alarm? Keyless Entry?
Thanks. I'll check it out tomorrow when it's light. My neighbors already think I'm weird. No point in confirming it by digging through my engine at 11 pm.

Re: Car Alarm? Keyless Entry?
Thanks for the advice guys. I was able to trace the wires from the alarm to the bottom of the dash panel (down by the hood release). There was a wiring harness there but nothing connected to it and some of the wires were cut. I took it to an electronics place and they said they could reuse the harness and easily hook up a system with what's already there.

Re: Car Alarm? Keyless Entry?
I haven't had anything done yet. The shop I talked to said it would be between 150 and 200$ depending on how much of the original system they can use.

My guess that's what they are doing. I know I sell a basic DEI Python alarm for about $175 installed.

Re: Car Alarm? Keyless Entry?
That was for the high quality alarm, rewiring the trunk release to work with the remote, as well as 2 4-button (doors, trunk, remote engine start, and panic alarm) remotes.

Re: Car Alarm? Keyless Entry?
I don't know what the brand was. I was more concerned with prices. I went to CarToys, told them what I wanted and they said they had one that would fit my needs.
