95.5 Rodeo

I would like to clean my engine before installing the new valve cover gaskets. I'd like to get rid of all the grease and oil that has accumulated. I've had problems in the past using the local coin-operated pressure washer. I cleaned the engine in my Ford Tempo and afterwards, it ran rough for a while. The problem stopped after warming it up, but I'm a little leery about doing it to my Rodeo because of all of the electrical connections.

Does anyone pressure wash their engine or have you found a better way?

I wash my engine compartment(s) down with what's left in the bucket after a car wash, then hose it all down. I've never had a problem related to it. If it's REALLY dirty, I'd soak it down with simple green or similar, let it sit, then hose it down. I would not use a hi press washer for fear of getting water where it shouldnt be.

personally, i never let water touch anything under the hood of my car...why not just take some all purpose cleaner, some rags, and just do it the old fashioned way? its not that hard.

I have been doing it for years on all my vehicles (2001 Rodeo included). The key is to keep your engine running while you do it (internal pressure will keep water out of any "iffy" areas). Also, do not spray into your air cleaner (duh!). Water will not hurt anything unless you allow it inside the engine...otherwise any heavy rain would ruin your vehicle. All of the wires and connectors should be water-resistant. Just do not hold the nozzle one inch away from anything of concern for an extended period.

Grady- I totally agree with your concept, but shocking a hot, all aluminum engine (any engine really) with cold water can do some nasty stuff, cause cracks, warpage, etc. However on a cold startup you should be ok. IMO, the main thing to be carefull around with the water is all the electronics.

I use a car wash on mine and never have any problems. I do leave the car running and make sure to avoid getting the alternator and the fuse box soaked. Being that I've never let it build up dirt and oil, it only take a little bit of pressure to wash the dust off.

Now if I can just get the lube guys to wipe the skid plate after changing the oil filter....

I do it all the time and never had a problem I as a tech wish more people would take the time to clean their engine it would make my job easier
