Motor oil to shine tires?gonenuts15792 04-19-2004, 12:49 AM I have heard that motor oil is a cheap and effective way to condition and shine your tires. Has anyone else heard of this, and does it work good. burnM 04-19-2004, 12:56 AM I don't know about it shining your tires..... but it's a hell of a way to do a hell of a burnout:) gonenuts15792 04-19-2004, 01:06 AM I saw a professional detailer talking about motor oil and shining tires on TV a few months back, but I caught the tail end of the interview, and the details are a little fuzzy. BullShifter 04-19-2004, 02:36 AM I think I saw the same same show. He said something like apply it twice in a week, then every month. I tried it twice and hardly notice anything, I'll stick with my good tire dressing. gonenuts15792 04-19-2004, 01:43 PM Yeah, thats the same show. I do remember him saying something along those lines, I also think he said that something about the first few applications aren't to noticeable, but as you keep applying it it gives you a better shine than some tire dressings. I'm going to try and find the article somewhere on the speed channel website. BullShifter 04-20-2004, 01:21 AM I'm thinking it was on the History Channel but not sure gonenuts15792 04-20-2004, 02:05 AM I was wondering why I couldn't find anything on the Speed Channels website. :banghead: burnM 04-20-2004, 04:09 AM I know an old school body guy who tells me that every Saturday he would clean his tires with ajax, paint the white walls, and shine the tires with vaseline. "But that was BEFORE they ever had stuff like armor-all" I guess that was back when men were men, and sheep were nervous :cwm27: Never mind......I'm going to bed....... :disappoin Rod&Custom 04-20-2004, 09:40 PM Hey! Vaseline, thats good! gonenuts15792 04-21-2004, 12:47 AM I'm going to have to try that trick with the Vaseline. I'm in the process of trying the motor oil trick right now, and it seems to be working after a couple of treatments. 4ss4s1n 05-02-2004, 09:00 PM What can you put if you accidentally get some on the tread.I think im gonna try that sometime. SuperStock96 06-03-2004, 09:46 PM I am pretty sure the motor oil trick looks good for a day or so, but dulls out very fast. That may be why you heard about a professional detailer using it for a show or just a weekend, but over time it will dry the tires out and dry-rot (if the car is not a daily driver. As for Vaseline, I think it doesn't stay on the wheels long. As you drive it slings off, even if you put on a thin coat. Stick to Tire Shine. The AJAX- Great product. Always use something good to scrub the tires before shining them. NerveAgent 06-04-2004, 02:30 PM screw that just use armor all. that stuff sounds dangerous. saturnsc2 06-04-2004, 03:30 PM screw that just use armor all. that stuff sounds dangerous. exactly! can you imagine what would happen if everybody put used oil on their tires? it would wash off & down the street sewers & into our lakes & streams. i love drinking used motor oil, don't you? Markgase2000 06-13-2004, 09:03 PM Engine oil has additives in it , some of those additive can eat rubber. Use a solvent based tire shine or armor all on the tires cus thats all its good for to me. Fricking using oil to do bunouts lmao , dont get the oil in your rotors or calipers or you could kill yourself. Use bleach for burnouts , makes better smoke. koeb$ 06-16-2004, 01:32 AM motor oil on tires is sketchy, jus think that same oil on ur tires can n prolly will splash onto ur car when u drive, and do you really want motor oil splashing onto your paint? stick to a tire gel 95corsy 06-20-2004, 08:54 PM Black Magic tire foam stuff works excellent IH8RICE 06-22-2004, 07:39 PM i wash and wax cars for extra cash in the summer and i know for a fact that turtle wax and meguires both make a special wax specifically for tires. only bad thing ive found is that dirt really sticks to it if you dont wipe them after, but wiping them give them a duller shine. saturnsc2 06-23-2004, 08:20 AM I saw a professional detailer talking about motor oil and shining tires on TV a few months back, but I caught the tail end of the interview, and the details are a little fuzzy. i'm sure the epa would take interest in this "professional" dealer talking about putting used motor oil on tires. i always thought your supposed to properly recycle used motor oil..... vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
