1963 mgb tranny problem? Help

Help. Is this just the way these cars are??? When shifting to 1st and 2nd it always grinds and won't go into that gear untill almost stopped.
I do smell oil and around the shifter get hot.

The 2nd gear syncro is probably shot. Mine has a bad syncro in 3rd and has been that way ever since I bought it 23 years ago. A little throttle shove in the right place makes it go in better. The heat is normal especially if the shifter boot is torn or gone. The shaft gets real hot. The oil smell may be coming from the engine. Most MGs leak somewhere.
