93 Escort having problems on hills and on highways

Hi,
I have a 93 Escort with slightly over 100,000 miles on it. Lately it has been cutting out when I have been going up hills or when I am on the highway. All of a sudden it will just cut out and I will start to deccelerate and I cannot do anything to get it back up to speed and then suddenly it will just come back. I was on the highway the other day and it wouldn't let me go more than 20 miles per hour and I kept having to pull over into the shoulder. Then after I let it drive in the shoulder at a low speed for a minute, it would come back and it would be fine for about 10 to 15 minutes and then it would happen again. The strange part is that it happens seemingly randomly (as in, not on all hills and not the whole time I am on the highway). I have tried putting some dry gas in it in case there is some water in the fuel, but it has not made much difference. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks

fuel pump or filter might be the prob... i would also check the wires and plugs... hope this helps... others please post.

Is there no response from your engine when this happens? Is the engine revving but not responding, or is there absolutely no response when you press the gas?
Check your tranny fluid level.

I got my tranny fluid and filter changed about a month ago thinking that was the problem but if anything the problem is just increasingly getting worse. If I put the car in neutral when it is decelerating then most of the time the engine will revv but occasionally I just can't get any response, even in neutral. By the way, thanks for the replies.
