Ok, I've had my Yukon for about 3 weeks now, so it's time to start digging into the sound system. I've just replaced the head unit, and the factory speakers are ok (for now).

The first thing I want to tackle is the factory 8" sub in the rear of the vehicle. I want to dig into that section of the truck and see what's inside.

Anyone have any experience w/ getting to the subwoofer and inside it's factory enclosure? I sure could use some guideance.

One thing you could try is go to www.jlaudio.com and look under the "steathbox" section for your Yukon. One you get to the yukon page, it is has a PDF file of instructions mainly on installing the stealbox....but does also cover removing the console and factory sub.

Dear KRS,
thank you for your advice.
I too have a Yukon, an 01, and it also has a sub in the left rear panel, where the older suburbans used to have the spare tire.
I could only find stealthboxes that use the room in the center console in between the front seats.
Do you know anything for the sub in the rear?

Hey guys, check this out. A guy has a page on installing a aftermarket sub in the rear of his 00 Suburban. I think he already had a box back there though. Didn't quite read it all.

No problem. What I would like to find is an OEM sub box that I could put in my Yukon. I figure if I put an 8 in the back spot and then upgrade the 8 in the front, then it would be enough bass for me to not need my box.

Hi KRS62, doing a sub in the back and the jl stealthbox sub in the console sounds great.
You may be able to custom fabricate a bigger box in the back and put a 10 inch or 12 inch in there.
I have not checked how much room is there.
Please notice that you will lose the storage bin in the front console, that is taken up by the stealthbox.
Just a note, I had a sub box with four 8 inch speakers in my small sedan with 900 watts feeding them.
It did give a good bass, but not the "boom box" style lower 2 octaves.
For that, you may have to give up cargo space and put a big box in the back.
Please let me know, how the sound ends up with two 8 inchers.

I've dealt with the ones in the front console...to get it out, you'd have to remove the entire console (which involves taking out front seats). IMO, you're better off to just connect a small 10" box somewhere in the truck...

Your best bet is to use the stock chevy plastic box and use some more polyfill material and buy an Image Dynamics ID v.3 8in subwoofer and install it in that stock box. The sub outdisplaces almost ever 8 in sub and even many 10s which means it can play just as loud and lower than many subs bigger than it. The sub has tremendous improvement over stock performance in that same box. Add a small amp like an Audison SRx2
