Rear Lamp failuremieth 04-15-2004, 12:50 PM Ever since I bought My 94 JGC last year, the message center always gives a "rear lamp failure" message . I've checked all the lamps, including brake (both left/right and upper center), turn signal, back up lights, and they're all lit. Any ideas on where to go with this problem. I'm contemplating just buying all new lamps and replacing them all, but I'd appreciate any comments on this... jgc96ltd 04-18-2004, 07:58 AM This is due to a defective/failed 'Tail-gate Module', which should be replaced. Access to the Tail-gate-module (TGM) thru the trunk. Location: On the left hand side, thru the small rectangular plastic cover where the spare wheel is stored. Once replaced, the Rear Lamp Failure will go OFF. aamech 04-18-2004, 02:57 PM Hey,My 97 jgc did the same thing. There are 3 bulbs in the upper light on the hatch and only one was burnt out, so I could'nt tell untill I just decided to change them all. That made the rear lamp failure light go off. Dsilver 04-21-2004, 01:05 AM Yeah, that might be the way to go, just replace all the bulbs, it couldn't hurt to put in new bulbs and they aren't that expensive. mieth 04-21-2004, 08:12 PM Thanks for all your advice. I'll try your suggestions and post my findings. Dsilver 04-21-2004, 08:20 PM Sounds good, good luck with your quest to fix your rear lamp failure problem :) jgc96ltd 04-22-2004, 03:17 AM Thanks for all your advice. I'll try your suggestions and post my findings. I'm darn sure that after repalacing all the lamps, you would still have that Rear Lamp Failure flashing on-board. I replaced all lamps and in disgust finally got the Dealer's electrician (he moon-lights for a few bucks) to accurately diagnose the problem. He replaced the Tail Gate Module and Presto, the Rear Lamp Failure has stopped. The Tail Gate Module costs around $68/-. Dsilver 04-22-2004, 08:49 PM You could be right, mieth I would suggest trying either of those things. mieth 05-11-2004, 09:13 PM Today I finally took the time to figure this out. The lamp failure would show when I pressed on the brakes so I figured it had something to do with the brake lamps. Because they were all lit and someone who replied was so adamant that it was the electronic module, I got one of those for $10 from a salvage yard. I figured for only $10, I’d take the chance. I installed it and it made no difference. Then I decided to replace all of the stop lamps. I noticed that the lamps in the center high-mounted stop lamps, although lit, were of the wrong type. They were 906, and my manual says they should be 921. I put in the 921 lamps and my problem is resolved. mieth 05-11-2004, 09:14 PM Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I really do appreciate it... mack737 05-12-2004, 11:42 AM Hello, New user here. I am having this problem currently on my Jeep. It initially started with the brake lights not working and I replaced a faulty brake switch. The brake lights are working now but I have the rear lamp failure when I press the brake pedal. Do you think it is still the rear lamp module? Thanks for the help. There is some great information here. Mack737 dj40 05-12-2004, 11:04 PM Had a similar problem with a brand new 93 gc after about 6 months, although it was a taillight if I remember correctly. Drove myself crazy changing out lightbulbs with no results. Under warranty, it was discovered that the wiring harness had been pinched and was shorting against the rear fender panel. If all else fails, it might be something to think about - a much harder fix though. Good Luck! vBulletin®, Copyright ©2010, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
