Power door locks

The power door locks on a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited just stopped working. They will lock manually and with the key, but will not lock or unlock when the button "lock" button is pushed. To lock all the doors, I must push each lock lever individually.

Any suggestions?

Try checking the fuses, they are along the side of the glove box when you open the passenger door. Its #14 yellow 20 amps, see if its still good if not replace it. Hope this helps.

And you can find fuses like that at grocery stores, drug stores, etc... and they are cheap.

the automatic door locks are controlled by a purple box gizmo behind a small easy to get to panel just below the headlight switch on the left of the steering wheel. Search for my user name 'taubin' to see my other post as I talk about my adventures and I am tried? 8-) If its faulty it CAN be replaced by you as easy as a pie but the part will cost about $150.

have you tried to push the lock/unlock button on the passenger door to see if they lock/unlock. Chances are the wiring between the door jam on the driverside got broken. These wires always brake from opening and closing the door.

If the passengerside door lock/unlock button works, then the wiring for the switch is probably broke and will need repair, NO BIG DEAL, just splice back together and ele. tape it up. I like to use Heat Shrink Wrap on the wiring just to be sure it doesn't break again.

I have a similar problem to rogerjenks in that my 95/96 GCL 4x4 no longer has an operative power lock. Manually all work and can be locked or unlocked.

My mechanic indicated that he had tried shortcutting between the power source and the main button unit in the driver's door and the locking mechanisms do activate, as well as in each door independently. This indicates to him that the wiring is alright. We have had the wiring worked on previously as I have had the usual problems with the harness between the driver's door and chassis. His best guestimate is that it is a faulty relay/activator in the system that needs replaced. He suggested that we take it to a dealer, if I didn't have a shop/service manual for the car. I don't have and I hate dealer service departments.

Can you tell me where the pertenant part would be located and how to get to it. I once, many years ago, did all my own work until they computerized and the backyard mechanic was shut out. I was a full-time judge for work and mechanicing on the side was for only our own vehicles and used to be my relaxation out of the office and off the bench.

When I get the car back, as it's been worked on for several items, I will check the fuses first but need to know what else needs to be checked in addition to the relay.

Sure, I just got my fixed by the way, the wiring harness between the door and the frame had several wires broken.

But the computer piece I was saying either in this post or others is on the left bottom of the dashboard. Two or three screws and you can remove that smaller piece of the dash, its plastic only and nothing attaches to it.

Inside is a package about the size of a pack of cigeretters. It has a speaker hole on it and a wiring harness plugs in.

This controls power locks, auto highbeam dimming, and some small stuff. It does not control power windows or factory alarm.

You can remove it and order a new one. My replacement was $150 and it was the last around back when I got it.

Does it sound like the door locks are trying to work? It is probably shorted somewhere. Have them hook it up to a machine if you have a lot of problems.

Check the I.O.D. fuse under the hood. That burnt out 20 amp fuse knocked out the power locks, radio, interior lights and the light under the hood on her 1993 Jeep Cherokee Laredo.

This is like necro-threading or something, wow dude, this thread is over five years old.

I sold that bad boy and I am currently in a 2010 Dodge Ram with a crew cab. That Jeep cost me thousands to keep running, and it kept getting wiring problems. I gave it away, I begged someone to take that junk.
