I've got a 90 Cherokee Laredo that constantly wants to die when i give it just a little gas or when i pull out of a parking space at a supermarket. Slow constantly stopping traffic is a serious pain. If i give it more gas it's just fine though. It's been doing this for about a year and in that time i've replaced the spark plugs, the oil, oil filter, D-cap and rotar and air filter. None of these seems to help. A friend of mine checked for vacuum leaks but didn't find any. Another individual mentioned that it might be a bad EGR valve but i know nothing about these. My girlfriend is getting sick and tired of me saying i'm going to fix this problem and is threatening to go and buy a new car. I really want to get this problem figured out. The only other abnormal thing the car does is that sometimes it revs up a couple thousand rpms when it starts and stays that way usually for a few seconds but sometimes longer. When this happens i'll have to tap the throttle to get it down or once in awhile even turn it off and start it again. This happens most often after it dies. I think someone else might have mentioned something about dirty fuel injectors but i really have no idea.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Hmmm that is strange. That sounds like what I had last month with my fuel delivery problem. My XJ would stall out if I didnt give it gas.... and eventually it would stall due to a problem with my fuel delivery.

Anyways, I'm not sure what you have but may I suggest that you post this in a different Forum as this Forum does not generate too much responses. Go to JeepsUnlimited.com and post on that Forum. I promise you'll get a lot more responses. Here is the link below to the XJ Forum. Good Luck

Try Cleaning the throttle body and the AIC (air idle control) attached to the throttle body. Check the adjustment of your TPS (throtle position sensor). Replace your O2 (oxygen sensor). The high reving on start-up is common on the jeeps and a bad O2 sensor is ususually the culpret.

Thanks for the resposes Ghetto & BCBlues. Know any good online dealers for Jeep parts? I'll check out Jeepsunlimited as well.

Dale, thanks for the offer but wouldn't it be more useful to the public if you were to just share that information right here on the BB? That is, unless you want to try and sell me something.

Hey now... easy :smokin:

I'm sure HeXploit wasnt trying to bad mouth you. He is the one in need of help, so I dont think that was his intentions. All that HeXploit was implying was that the information you would have supplied to him may have helped out others on the board... so why not share?

But you do have a point and that its your own information and you can do what you please.

So I suggest that you HeXploit email Dale, and then Dale can decide if he wants to post or not

Who the hell said that you are asking for anything in return? I sure as hell didnt...

If I read correctly, I don't see anyone begging for your information... so how is anyone wasting your precious time?

YOU were the one who offered the information to HeXploit...

Sorry Dale but from my experience people with aol email addresses WHO SHOUT EVERY WORD and offer to help you if you email them are generally looking to spam you with something. If this is not the case then i sincearly apologize. Thus the reason for keeping my email address quiet especially when i'm not familear with the person. If you would post that info here though i would be more than happy to check it out.

I had the same problem with my 1990-it was the EGR Valve.I would highly suggest replacing the EGR Valve(about $95.00) or better yet to provide temporary relief and rig it find the EGR Valve and disconnect the vaccum hose that goes from the transducer(black thing) into it. That should make it idle much smoother although if your state's law makes you pass emission tests you will need to replace the valve. I would imagine you can find the EGR Valve if you know anything about cars because im a teenager and know hardly anything about cars and found it. If you need help though look down kinda by where you fill the brake fluid and you should see a thing with a barcode on it or if the barcode is off it will probably be oxidized metal but its a valve. Anyway you should see a vaccuum line going into the right side of it try popping that off and seeing if it works. If not its probably not in your EGR System. Just an idea but if its between checking that or selling it I'd pop it off. If you need tech. assisstance replacing the valve I can help as well.

Hey Jeepguy i was exactly as you called it. I just popped the hose off on the right side of the egr valve and plugged it(the hose) with a screw. No more dying in traffic. Thanks!

Hexploit I'm very glad that one of my tech tips helped. I guess these Cherokees have similar problems. It will still rev real high when it starts but it should do it less often. Anyway I would really still suggest replacing that valve eventually. Theres just 2 Torx Bolts holding it on and the vaccuum hose. Also since the EGR Valve is defective I am guessing its clogged with oil. I would also suggest checking to see if you have blowby. A very simple way to do this on Cherokees is take the front rubber tube that goes into the crankcase off while the engine is running and see if smoke comes out if it does reply to this and ill throw some technical support your way.

you guys ever think to check your fuel lines, and fuel filters? that would be the first place I would check, and clean your Carb... plugging a hose is not a real solution to the problem.... As well as plugging the EGR return reduces your fuel economy.... from a jeeps already poor 15-18 MPG.... my nice honda doea about 28-32 MPG, and my jeep I'm building up is going to get the best it can with it's S10 motor....

quick your timing. the timing chain may be streched and needs to be replaced

I didnt say plugging the hose was the final solution to the problem, all I said was that it would make it quit dying temporarily i dont think you've had the problem killah but it's a big pain to have to use both feet on the pedals to stay running at an intersection, so i have to do what i can to provide the temporary relief. Fuel filters and lines arent his problem all he needs to do is replace the valve. You made me sound like an idiot, the idea does work for a while although eventually the valve does need to be replaced.

Hey jeepguy,
I just felt I needed to recognize. I was just living with this problem having to restart all the time. I read your post, pulled the vac line and my jeep no longer dies. Thanks. gotta give you mad props for that one.
