Pam, not sure about the heat problem I don't think that it is related to the trany sticking in second gear. But the sticking in second gear is most likely a bad speed senser. The same thing happeed on my 96' with the computer giving almost unreadible codes. After I had the sensers (there are two) replaced it shifts fine and has been for three months now. The shop checked the sensers when I brought it in and told me they were ok but after bringing it back to them a second time for the same problem and insisting on them replacing them it has been fine ever since. It will only cost you about $70 to $80 to have it done. The check engine light is related to driving in second gear for too long a time. I'm sure that someone else can help you with the heat problem.
