Hi from greece.
Really sad i subscribed 3 days before the site goes down.

Anyway i would like to ask the following jist in case
someone has an opinion about that.

The stock impreza 1.6 ts (naturally aspired) has an output of 95 ps (bhp) and 14.6 torque.

The local dealer in greece upgrades these models
with a turbo, producing a car with effective 150 bhp.

However this is done in greece and i dont consider
appropriate doing aftermarket mods before-market!

I have a family of three members and i find the 1.6 ts
S/W really nice.

However 95 bhp is too little, nevertheless i dont wanna
trust anyone putting a turbo or adding paralel ECUs
on a brand new stock model.

I was thinking of gaining some extra power by replacing
the exhaust system, or by reprogramming the ECU.

What do you guys think i would do to gain more power
while retaining the engine as built,tested, and approved by the
manufacturer, i.e. while leaving it naturally aspired?

Maybe i'll buy some books from amazon, gain some knowledge
on the mechanics (i know english and i am a computer s/w
(software no station wagon!) engineer, so i think i can handle it, but for now i want the stock mechanical parts
to remain intact.

Its a tough decision since this model 1.6 TS (95hp) is
already too expensive (20,500 euros ~ 24600.0 USD!!)
amd its too unpleasant to have paid that money
for ... 95 bhp.

What do you say???

Wow, I've never heard on a 1.6TS before!

I really don't think you're gonna get much power at all out of such a small engine but I dunno as, again, I've never even heard of it. Have you considered an engine swap?

However how far can i go with new exhaust and/or
reprogramming?

Is adding a turbo a reliable solution????
I wanna keep the car for at least 10 yrs!

man I wouldn't even bother turbocharging or modifying a 1.6 litre engine, its just too damn small. I think your best bet if you really want an impreza is to get one and perform an engine swap.
Get an engine imported from overseas, or find another engine that can fit into the impreza but as for the 1.6litre, I really don't think theres much potential for modification there coz the engine capacity is just too small.

Is the 1.6TS a flat "boxer" engine like the rest of Subarus models? Is it AWD? Sorry but I'm just interested.

Do you know what kind of laws you guys have about importing engines from other countries or swapping in older engines? Cuz either an N/A 2.5 swap or an older 2.0 turbo would be reliable and make more power than that turbo kit you were talking about (the 2.0 turbo would make a LOT more), and I don't think it would cost much more then the turbo kit.

Yes its a boxer horizontal, and its AWD like
all subarus.

However after all i think 95 is ok!!!
With AWD some one doesnt care about sleepy roads,
snow, dust, rain etc..., he can go to the beach
no prob!!

Hi Pal, I am from Singapore and also driving a Impreza 1.6TS.

I guess there are a coupoe of things you can do which we did in Singapore with of Strict Traffic rules of Turbo charging and ENgine Swap.

What we TS owners in SIngapore did was remove the Cat(but it's Illegal in Singapore) of your Xos and prolly change or upgrade your Xos system. Afterwhich u can add in a Unchip or any ECU. Change your Pulley to a Lightened ones. Add in a Legacy Air Intake. And if u do Drop by in SIngapore can prolly take a look at our Locally Produce GNG air Capsule, SURBO, or Electronic Turbo(If i din remember wrongly)

Many TS drivers have done that and experience better performances Expecially the Decat of your Exos with a Unichip ECU add on, Lighten Pulley.

I personally have add on the GNG, and have to say that it's better ride than before.

The above mentioned items are some of the upgrade u can do to your TS. BUT dun expect too much of a Increase in Horses. But i have to say that with the add on that i have mentioned above, you'll difeinitely find the 1.6TS a better ride than stock.

95hp is more than my first car had. My old '91 Ford Mustang 4-cylinder had 88hp. Woohoo! And don't listen to what anybody says; it's always worth it to mod an engine for more power.

An intake and exhaust upgrade will do wonderful things for you, if you don't have much money. I would do plumbing modifications before I did the ECU. The ECU upgrade will be more effective once the airflow issues are resolved.

Also look for some engine mounts that fit your car; they will help you put what power you have to the wheels better. A solid or polyurethane motor mount (and transmission mounts, if you want) will help reduce torque loss through squishy rubber parts.

Pulleys are also a good idea, as they will significantly lighten the moving parts of the motor and will help you apply the power you already have.

My old Mustang was never all that fast, but it was a lot more fun when my brother and I got done with it, and all we did was intake, exhaust, and suspension upgrades.
