OK, This is the weird thing. I can start my truck and go for a few miles turn it off, and it will be fine to start right away. If I go for more than about 20 minutes and turn it off, I have to wait about 15 minutes before it will crank. The engine just does not turn over. i have replaced the starter, and that was not the problem.
any ideas?

Do you have a heat shield on the starter? Also you could check for bad connections.

Do i need one? I have checked the wiring, but it could be that the wire to the starter gets too hot and expands. Does that sound reasonable? I guess I could change the wire to the starter.

GM use to have factory installed heat shields back then. If the starter was ever replaced it might not have been re-installed.
Once the engine warms it heats up the starter and once the starter gets to a certain temp it doesn't want to work.

You might be able to get one at a salvage yard or parts store. Here's what they look like.. (sort of)

I think you have alarm on your truck you need to pull starter wires from alarm system and put them back like it came from factory

I have found a heat shield, and will put it on this weekend. My truck is a third car for me and the wife so no hurry. I will post the results after I get it done.

Just some insight,
I run full length headers and no heat shield. I have an Auto Zone starter and have had it for two years. I thought it was a heat problem too when mine started to do the same thing. Turned out the battery was on the blitz. It takes more umpf to start a hot engine than it does to start a cold...just a heads up that it just might be a weak bat....
