FD and 13B REW

ok depending on what the insurance company says about my car, and what kind of loan I can get, I might be looking into buying an FD for $3900 that was a theft recovery and needs "mechanical servicing" not sure what exactly that means but I e-mailed them to find out... anyways I'm expecting if I were to just rebuild it then it should be fine, and maybe fix a few things, who knows... I'll find out... but I was just curious how much a rebuild would cost for the 13B REW and how much it costs for new stock turbos, or if it'd be just as cost efficient to get an upgraded single turbo... just fill me in, I don't know all the specifics about the REW engine since I have an FC and wasn't planning on some old guy wrecking it, the engine has 66k miles on it so it needs a rebuild anyways

Re: FD and 13B REW

Rebuild can cost from $2500 to $5000 quality will vary with price.

My rebuild / Street Port / 3MM seals cost me $4500.

I would recomend a street port while its apart and skip the 3mm seals unless your rotors are worn then the 3mm is a sensible choice.

I have a set of rebuilt twins off of a 13B-rew for $1000 from Majestic Turbo in Waco Texas.

Good luck FD's are beautiful cars.

Re: FD and 13B REW

man a rebuild is a lot, I can buy a new RZ engine for $3300, and those have RZ turbos and upgraded oil injection...

although mazdatrix rebuils engine for $2400 with all used parts(seals and springs are new) and $6500 for all new parts

I thought it was supposed to be cheaper to rebuild a rotary because it has less parts? I figured around $1800 for just a basic rebuild, looks like its gonna exceed my finances after all

You can get a Mazda Factory reman for about 2K.

Mazda engines are very simple and easy to rebuild. Rebuild kits can be bought for the brave do it yourselfer.

I all honesty though if a rebuilder is charging 2500 I would be suspicious.

The reason is that most FC engines or FD engines have high milage. Some of the cheaper rebuilders will re-use parts that should be tossed in an effort to save money. How much does it suck after you spend 2K on a rebuild and wait for weeks for your car to have it blow a seal of some sort because work parts were used.

Best bet.. Mazda reman. It even has a warranty. 1 year 12K miles.

Re: FD and 13B REW

Check out http://www.rotaryengine.com They specialize in rotary engines and also sell modified ones if you're willing to spend some extra cash. All their engines have the 3mm apex seals. Have enough frogskins, they also have 20B engine. Give them a call and they can answer your questions.

Re: FD and 13B REW

as far as the turbos go i would switch to a single turbo. I was told that the 13b having 2 turbos was the reason it was so "unreliable".

Re: FD and 13B REW

I'm looking for a TII no I think, depending on what they say about my car... and I like this price from that web site "13b T. ('89-'91) : $1855 CDN, $1325 USD*" thats for a rebuilt one... maybe I'll get lucky and find an S5 body with no engine for real cheap, whether its turbo or not... I could always buy a hood if it wasn't anyone know anyone with a shell?
