Just took my truck to the shop today after months of it losing 1/2 gal of coolant per week mysteriously. They took the heads off the engine today and the gasket looked in good shape and so far no cracks in the heads. The block has a lot of black goo where it has been mixing with antifreeze. The push rods are worn on one end either from having to push a thick oil around or the antifreeze. If they can't see a crack in the block all we know to do is to put new head gaskets on it and see how long it lasts. I don't have the money for a new engine. This is a 1999 silverado with 75,000 on it. Should this be happening so soon? And do I have any warranty options to pursue with Chevrolet? At what point do you quit spending time with the old engine and start from scratch?

My truck did the EXACT same thing a few months back. It didnt have but about 75K on it either. I had everything checked out that was possible, but in the end, had the head gaskets replaced and found a really small, almost undetectable crack on one of them. Ever since I had them replaced, it has been fine. I will say one thing though, be sure the mechanic re-adjusts the valves once everything is installed. Mine didn't get adjusted and they rattle like hell.
