93 gc with horrible steering... how to fix?
i have a 93 grand cherokee laredo, and it has 180000 miles on it....
... i know it is cause by the all time 4wd, but the the turning radius without the wheels starting to kick has gone down dramatically. i have not idea if there is a way to get this fixed, but i'm looking to sell it and need to get that fixed in order for it to be worth anything
PLEASE HELP!

It sounds as if the limited slip differential in the transfler case is not allowing sufficient slippage between the front and rear driveshafts when turning.
Are all your tires the same size and wear??
Otherwise, a transfer care rebuild may be required, if you want to run 4wd on anything other than slippery surfaces.

my tires are all the same size, however the steering problem does wear down the front tires a LOT faster than they should, due the the screaching and sliding of the outside tire anytime i try to make some sort of tight turn, such as getting into a parking space or something.... i don't believe there is any way to shut off the 4wd, i've read everything i can i and haven't found anything on that

My 1994 had the same problem. It was impossible to park, and frustrating to even go through a drive through at a fast food area because of the turning. this all started at about 140,000 miles, about a month ago at 150,000 miles i finally had it rebuilt. It was about 2,200 bucks for mine. I was mad about spending the money, but the jeep drives like new.

Hi,
My ’93 Grand had the same problem when hot. Changed the fluid using dextron2, as specified in the service book and Haynes manual -it got worse! A friend has a ’97 Grand that specifies special fluid only available from Jeep dealers. It is about three times the price of Dextron but it fixed the problem, and is cheaper than a rebuild!
Cheers
Dave

My 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee does the same thing when I'm in a parking deck or trying to park in a space, & we can't figure out what to do. Have you solved this problem yet? The wheels just skid along & the car bucks some. SOmeone told me that it's because it's all wheel drive, but I don't buy it. If that was the case, who would buy any all wheel drive vehicle. Any help you have for this mystery would be appreciated!

What did you have rebuilt & did it help solve the problem? I'm having the same problem with my 1998 GC & it's frustrating that we can't find the problem. We changed all the tie rods & had my tires rotated & a front end alighnment & it still hasn't helped. The guy at the service station said it was because it was all wheel drive & I didn't buy that reason. Can you shed some light on this for me pls.? thanks alot,

Re: 93 gc with horrible steering... how to fix?
Bakermel, u said that it bucks while turning. I have read other peoples problems on here and they had the same thing and it end up beign the Viscouf Coupling (VC). which is very common in the Quadra-Trac (NP249) transfer case. mine has already been replaced right b4 I got my jeep and I have no problems turnign, actually I think the turning ratio is great. I would seriously investigate the VC. I think that is where ur problem lies.

Re: 93 gc with horrible steering... how to fix?
if yor asking about the fluid dave welly mentioned above - its ATF+3 or betteryet ATF +4 for the transmission. better to use a synthetic ATF like amsoil in the transfer case cause it reduces heat. I think that dave was talking about another problem though
sometimes wear in the front axle cv joints can cause the jump too or atleast contribute to it.

Thanks for responding sir.
I will try that fluid on the TC.
I just replaced my axles and the upper and lower ball joints.
Again thanks.
