Fuel system trouble?

Hi,
I'm a new member hoping someone can help me narrow down my problem. I have a 1991 Grand Prix 3.1. Last night the car stuttered and died, now it will start and idle fine, but when I take it out of park it will not accelerate, and dies after several seconds. My father suggested the fuel filter as the likely problem, so I replaced that. The car ran like normal for about 1 minute, then the problem returned. Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions!

Cheers,Danny

Re: Fuel system trouble?

I have a 1991 3.1 Grand Prix and this is a shot in the dark, but check for spark in all cylinders. I faced a similar problem right out of the blue too. If one of the coils or ignition module die it'll decrease power greatly. Watch for missing spark on cylinders that come off the same coil. Don't replace a coil just because of this, it's not a garantee the coil is the probem. To be sure you need to check the primary and secondary winding resistance. I don't know those values right off the top of my head, but any manual will tell you what they are. One more thing, if it is the coil, don't replace it with a Wells (brand name) replacement unit, I've had trouble with these. Incidentally, Autozone only carries Wells for the 3.1 Engine. Try to find a Sorenson (brand name) at Advance or Napa Autoparts. They'll be around the same price of $19.00, and I've found they work a lot better.

Re: Fuel system trouble?

I have seen stuff like this and is related to fuel delivery. Maybe that the fuel pump is not pushing enough PSI's to the injectors. Check the fuel pump pressure
