i need to know what to do to my ride, so it ain't so pathetic this car is tight and i just finished my hood scoop so i have the room for some mods but i need to know what would add the mass hp and torque so i can blow some minds
Re: wut to do for mass hp for a 1985 jetta with 100hp
Well what engine do you have? Im guessing 1.8 liter CIS injected 8 valve? There are a lot of mods out there for the 1.8 engines. I would start with the basics, like making the engine breathe better. Go with a full exhaust system, If your engine has the single outlet manifold, then get the dual outlet manifold with downpipe and bigger cat. Then get a good air filter like K&N and gut your airbox and put that in... Look on www.cardomain.com and find people with your engine, and ask how they modded the airbox to get good results. Then If you have more money, maybe do a port and polish on the head and intake. Look and see if a bigger throttle body is available for your injection system... Turbocharging is also a good option, I think that making a homemade turbo setup for the 8 valve shouldnt be too hard if you have some help. These are just my ideas, and they are kinda in order from easiest/cheapest to harder/more expensive... check this site out, and see the order that they put it in...
buy a v8 car, thats the only real option.
if i pulled up to you in a stock 345hp camaro, there is nothing you could rice out enough on that little jetta to take it..trust me.
a jetta is a fuel economy car not a hot rod, so i recommend to stop destroying the little car from what it was meant to do and leave high horsepower and speed to the big boys (v8's).
p.s. fast and the furiuos is not real.

Ok, this is so typical, I really hate people like this. Not everybody is "lucky" enough to own a V8. I hate getting involved in the whole "imports vs. domestics" argument, but smoknbarrels comment is just plain ignorant.
First of all, V8's arent the best cars in the whole world, and to come and sign up on a Vw forum just to knock on somebodys car, is totally missing the objective here. Everybody has their preferences, and to come on a forum to preach your opinions is total BS, and a waste of our time.
Second, I enjoy driving a car that gives me: Reliability, Practicality, Good gas economy, and Cheap insurance, which is something we all know you will rarely find with any V8...
Also, Bladez is not asking how to rice out his Jetta, we all know how to put on a big wing, body kit, and a fart can muffler. He is asking a totally reasonable question that calls for an intelligent answer. (I might add that smoknbarrels didnt even answer the question therefore wasting our time) Vw engines are capable of producing some very respectable power with the correct mods, There happens to be a 97 Jetta VR6 Turbo near me, that is running a 9.75 in the quarter mile...
Nevertheless, I do agree that a Jetta is a economy car, and is lacking in the Hp department, but there are lpenty of mods available to make them move. To come waste our time with ignorant, biased comments is just stupid...
Re: wut to do for mass hp for a 1985 jetta with 100hp
jettaboy said all the things i was thinking... yeah jettas don't have 500HP and won't beat a v8 off the line, but it isn't all about winning a race. especially against a car not in the same class. I have plans for my 03 1.8T and i'm not doing it to have the ability to race a 500HP dodge viper or anything. To me it's more the satisfaction of knowing you don't have to stick with what the factory gives you when they hand you the keys.
you two girls need to go back to school..
I have been modding cars longer then the two of you have been out of diapers. into everything from shaving door handles and tail lights to droping v8's into S-10 trucks. and you are talking out yor ass when you are saying you have a neighbour that has a 9 second jetta..that is PURE IMPOSSIBLE unless it says "boeing jet turbine" under the hood.. you are just some teenager that is too hung up on fast and the furious!
what I am giving is good advice.. you know why?? that is becuase I know if buddy tries to crank seroius horsepower out of his car it is not gonna last more then a day after he spins a bearring.. then he'll have no car which is worse.
he is asking for a lot of horsepower, and rationally speaking it can't be done. an extra 100 hp for a jetta is a lot of horsepower!
learn ho to read!! his topic says
"how to get mass hp for a 100hp jetta!"
Re: Re: wut to do for mass hp for a 1985 jetta with 100hp
apparently you can't read either

i'm sure he isn't expecting to get 300HP out of what he has. I don't even want that much out of mine.
Instead of saying stuff from experience which I'm sure you have (i'm not questioning that) maybe you could just say how much he can get realistically. That's where your experience could come in. We have jettas because we obviously don't want a domestic or V8. WE have our jettas that we want to make better. With no expectation of beating your "stock 345HP camaro." If you can't handle that than maybe you should just stop posting.

Ok, calm down Smoknbarrels... First of all, I happen to love the sound of a V8, (especially the 97 Mustang Cobra) Dont get me wrong here, I can see both sides of this debate. my friend used to have a 94 GT 5.0 with a few mods, and that thing could snap necks. but besides being fast, his car also cost about 6 grand a year for insurance, was horrible in the rain and snow, and got crappy gas mileage... all I am saying is that you came onto the forum preaching the usual "muscle cars are better then imports" bs. Yet you didnt offer any real help for bladez question, instead you stated the obvious. Yeah, I bet a lot of us would love to drive a tricked out V8 and do sitting burnouts, but some of us have to make a comprimise when it comes to cars... But even if we drive a 4 cylinder that does not mean that we shouldn't have pride in our rides, and enjoy modifying them... So please, I think I speak for most of us when I ask that you stop preaching your muscle car bs. to us, and keep it to yourself unless you have some relevant suggestions to make...
Second, we all know the fast and the furious was bs. good for a few laughs, and to the poor people out there that rice out their cars in this style, I feel bad for them and would love to put them out of their misery... I dont know about Bladez, but If you look at my car you won't find anything rice on it, not everyone is as blind as you think... German cars are much farther from being rice then you would imagine. Give me a MK1 Gti with a few grand for mods, and I bet it would run circles around your V8 Rwd in a road course...
Third, as for the Jetta VR6 making 9.75 runs. Yeah, it is true. It was originally making a 10.391 sec. pass on a F**kin Stock bottom end VR6 Turbo engine, and making 516 dyno Horsepower... As of Now this kid has a 2.9 liter VR6, with 590 Hp to the wheels to make the 9.75 runs. so yeah, it is possible... Featured in Eurotuner, November 2003, so find yourself a copy and read it...
Im sick of this Import vs. Domestic bs. everyone deserves to drive what they want, and do whatever they want to it without your biased, unhelpful, and ignorant comments... Take your Vw symbol out from under your name, and stop knockin on other peoples rides...
the only thing you two should be hootin' about is the fact Calgary is kick'n azz! and back to the orginal point.. i wasn't off topic at all, Blades asked for mass hp that would BLOW MINDS!!.. and the amount of motors i've built in my life i personally know the jetta is not going to blow any minds. so i simply recommended to him to get a v8 car, then mod it a little and he will blow some minds!!
and jettaboy..you keep talkin about this 600hp jetta as if it's real! stop lying to us all, this forum is for serious people that want to know the truth. lets think about it logically.. there is no way a front wheel drive car can be that fast!! bloody hell i've seen 1000hp v8's lift the front end off the ground, dig into the pavement so hard with massive boots in the rear and still not get 9 seconds. you are talking crap, admitt it! haha
what tires can a jetta fit in the front??? the widest my vr6 can get is 225's. oooo....so big!! (NOT) and once you step on it the car takes all the weight off where it needs it the most (the front end for the jetta).. thats like trying to race v8's in reverse!! the physics just don't work.. the weight transfer is all wrong.
lol...a 2.8 liter engine that puts out 590hp at the tires, thats a fools dream. let me guess..it's street legal too! haha.. if this is so true then give us all a link to a web site or some engine stats like what kind of goddies he's got hang'n off it obviously he would have to be runing straight alcohol to get numbers like that...you kids make me laugh..thanks!
Don't get me wrong though.. i am a vw supporter but not in the same way as you two.. i think the car is nice with its european design and it does have pretty good handling being a compact car, mine is lowered with fat rims and looks pretty clean... but it stops there, it's only got good enough power to shuffle around traffic and thats what i use it for.
it is a good car, but i don't recommend to deviate from it's original purpose.
Re: wut to do for mass hp for a 1985 jetta with 100hp
First off smoknbarrls, a jetta is a german vehicle, you seem to be aware of this, yet you used the term rice in conjunction with it. This implies jap import, which the Jetta is not. I think most of what these guys said pretty much goes along with my ideas, and I can assure you (smoknbarrels) that if you keep up these flame posts then you are gonna get burned, or most likely, kicked.
V8's are fine, V10's are great, V12s are sweet. But some of us cant afford, and frankly, dont want a V8 or bigger engine. I am happy with my Jetta, even if it cant beat a V8, its still a neat car.
And what the hell is this original purpose crap???
Please dont give me that sh*t. If everyone kept cars and used them for thier "Original purpose" than there would be no such thing as hot rodding.
On the original question in this forum:
I agree with jettaboy, I would just go for emission upgrades and intake upgrades. They are cheapo and they should supply you with about 15-50 HP if you fully upgrade the intake/exhaust system with good parts. As for forced induction, I would go with Superchargers, they put less stress on the engine and they are less complicated.
Re: wut to do for mass hp for a 1985 jetta with 100hp
Ok. Here is a site for the 97 Jetta... read it and weep, and yeah, i know it says 10.49 seconds, but look on the top and see that the site is 2003, so its a little outdated.
If you read down, you will see that it says that it is a stock 12 valve VR6 with 50k miles, and tells the mods to it... I think I just proved you wrong.
Maybe you should wake up and realize that anything is possible if you really want to accomplish it...
