Contour 95 GL Atx - Is it a transmission breakdown

I recently had transmission issue and repair shop suggested that I should rebuilt the tranny. I got it back home open a few things etc. I changed the Vechile Speed Sensor.

While the car was still on jacks I put the car in park. Non of the wheels were moving. Then I put in reverse, the driver side front wheel rotated fine but the passenger side did not move. When the car was in drive, 2 or 1. both the wheels were rotating and then the driver side wheel stop or intermitently kept rotating. the passenger side wheel was rotating fine.

When I took the car for test drive, I had to accelarate quite much before the car started to move. It went for for some distance.

The car as earlier can drive fine in reverse gear but on in drive, 2 or 1. Please help me to understand is the tranny really need to be rebuilt?

Thanks

The way the wheels are spinning off the ground are completly normal. If your trans is full of ATF then what happens to these is this: The pump gasket blows out, then this creates excessive oil pressure which then blows apart the input housing. Thats the typical problem with the early models. Don't mean to confuse you. I'm diagnosing something without driving it. I could be way off also.

As long as you trust the people that diagnose it. Or get second opinion at another shop.
