what were GM engineers smoking when they made this but maybe a rival to the Ford Forty Nine

In person, I thought the Bel Air was attractive, if not a bit conservative. The Forty-Nine convertible is much better looking than the coupe was.

They need to change the front end of the Bel Air. Longer nose, different grille & headlights.....
I agree that they could have done better, easily.

I'm not, it needs to be lined up head to head with the azteks and new thunderbirds, bricks on gas, full of explosives and bury the leftovers with nuclear waste in the sahara :zx11pisse

Ford were stupid to bring the T-Bird back that way.
If they had any sense at all they would have btought it back as a real sports car in competition with the corvette. If they had of done that Ford could actually claim to build a sports car.
