2000 Isuzu Rodeo CEL, fuel tank sending unit

:banghead: I am the original owner of a 2000 Rodeo - My problems started around the 21st of February. My CEL came on. I called the dealership where I bought it - the Service Manager told me to bring it in because it is still under warranty. The code they got was for the cam sensor. It cost me $50 (deductible) to have this warranty work done. I thought problems were over with. On the 27th of February - the low fuel light began flashing, the CEL came on, and the fan was blowing - when the engine was cold - and it was idling high. I called the service dept again - my appointment was for 8 am Saturday the 13 of March. They hooked up the computer checker and told me the code was 463 - they told me that was the code for the fuel tank sending unit and it was not covered under warranty - and it was going to cost $500. I was so upset - I left and logged into google and did a search. I found all of these messages. I plan on calling the 800 #'s for Isuzu. I thought they were trying to take advantage of my being a female, but it seems they are doing this to others as well. I need some advice on where to go. I believe they knew about the fuel tank sending unit in February - can't prove that though. I live nearly two hours from the dealership and it is a hardship for me to take it in. My vehicle is just now at 50,500 miles. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hi! I came acrosss your post by doing a search and I am having the exact same problem. I also have a 2000 rodeo but I have 74K miles on mine.

My problem started last July (when I had about 60K miles on it). The CEL came on and the truck felt like it was about to stall. Brought it in to the dealer, they told me I needed an EGR valve, the plugs needed cleaning etc.., total cost was $500+. My husband told them no and we left the truck alone. It ran fine except for the CEL. It would go on and off.

I now brought it to a friend of ours who has a shop. He tuned it up and hooked the truck up to the computer and he came back with a code 463. I'm also having the problem with the gas light blinking, but it would only happen when I have a 1/4 tank of gas and I'm making a right turn.

Have you gotten anything resolved with this issue? Did you call Isuzu? How many others out there are having this problem as well?

you buy a fuel sending unit from St. Charlie Isuzu its gonna cost you 35 bucks. those losers at the dealership are ripping you off. you dont need to replace the whole pump just the sending unit. Got mine 2 days ago now i gotta install it myself

I have a 99 Isuzu Rodeo and my fuel gage is all messed up. I've noticed that it gets very bad gas milage. It has 50k miles. When I fill up the fuel gage shows full but after 50 miles the fuel tank gage is useless. At that point The fuel warning light goes on and off and the gage reads empty. I've called the dealer and they say it takes 3 hours to remove the tank at a labor charge of $297.00. The fuel sending unit which has the fuel pump attached costs $270.60. I called another dealer and he said the sending unit costs $45. I think I'm going to replace this myself.

OMG! Why does my car do the same thing. When it is at 1/4 tank, the low fuel light starts to blink. One time, my tank was full and the fuel gage went all the way to 1/4, the low fuel light started to blink and then the gage went back to its original fuel level again. Please let me know how you guys resolved the problem. Also, my car make a noise when i go over bumps or make turns. The noise is coming from the right side and when I took it to a dealer, they said many things and by the third time, they said the noise is caused by the bolts and bushings in the rear on the passenger side and it's going to cost $250 for labor and parts. I took it to another mechanic and he said it is due to the rear shocks and it'll cost $313 for parts and labor. I am so confused! I hate this car now! PLEASE HELP!

This is so nuts, I have a 2001 Rodeo and I have been having the exact same problem....mine is at the shop now, and I have failed my emissions testing, so I have no choice but to get these repairs done...along with replacing my left cadalytic converter....which is the big one! I really love my truck, but I am learning to really hate it and I seriously doubt that I would ever buy another Isuzu, because it is just strange how everyone is having the same problems I am....

I had the EXACT same problem with my 2000 Rodeo right around 40K miles. I got the major run around from all local dealers, being told that my car didnt have a sending unit by some, others telling me you had to replace the tank and the sending unit and the pump and that it was not under warranty etc. Ended up making a quick call out of Isuzu HQ in california, they know about the problem, they know its under warranty, and they are more than welcome to call your local dealer and let them know that they will be fixing it under warranty for you :) Thats what I did and ended up getting the pump and the sending unit replaced for free, not even a deductable.

Has anyone else found their rodeo to be a major peice of crap? Mines been trouble since day one. Im most likely trading it tonight for a 2001 tahoe, they seem to be a much better vehicle. Anyone have any thoughts on those?

Hello all. Well, I fell prey to the similar problems expressed by most everyone in this thread. I am the owner of a 2000 Rodeo LS, V6. I've experienced the flashing/solid Check Engine Light (CEL), and the flashing fuel light when I had more than 1/2 tank of gas left. I currently have over 95K miles on my Rodeo. Last year (2003), I took my vehicle for emissions testing and to my astonishment, I passed. The temporary solution to my flashing CEL and flashing fuel light was a full tank of gas and a quick trip to the emissions testing site before the chronic problem reared its ugly head. Oddly, the full tank of gas worked every time, but for only a short period of time before the lights came back on.

Well, this year, it didn't go as planned and I failed emissions testing. Since I knew there was an existing problem, dummy me paid $85 for a diagnostics test. The "suggested" repair was to replace my fuel pump because it was causing a misfire, and a clogged EGR valve. The total repair cost was going to be over $900 (new fuel pump, & induction flush). But, with an unrequested 10% discount (automatically made me believe their repair fee was inflated), I was "only" going to be out a little over $800. Oh, the fuel pump, as I was told, could only be purchased from Isuzu, which was going to cost $300 and since they would have to drop the gas tank to install a new one, the cost for labor was going to be somewhere in the area of another $300.

I'm sure you're wondering why I said, "dummy me," so let me briefly explain: A good friend of mine brought it to my attention that the folks at Autozone, if you're lucky to have one around where you live, will run a free diagnostics test on your vehicle, which reads the failure codes associated with CEL problems. Now, no guarantee they will troubleshoot the your problems, but if you have a good friend like mine who is mechanically inclined, he/she might be able to help you research the failure codes and find a solution to the problem.

Back on track.... Both my buddy and I separately came across this cross-talk about the CEL and fuel light problems and more intriguing, the talk of a "fuel tank-sending unit." My buddy who I can't praise enough, put his mechanical thought process to work and decided my first course of action should be to replace the "fuel tank-sending unit." Part cost with military/police discount from Isuzu, just under $40. Well, he and I spent one day getting the part and changing out the old one. Caveat: He knew what he was doing and had all the necessary tools. Generically, after reassembling the parts and reinstalling the tank we fired up the Rodeo and low and behold, the CEL was no longer on and the fuel light was no longer flashing even though there was just about five gallons of gas in the tank. The guage appeared to be reading accurately. We let it run for 15 - 20 minutes with "NO" warning lights. Okay....we thought we ("he") solved the problem, so we were on our way to fill the gas tank when about three miles down the road, the warning light for "Reduced Power" came on and the CEL came on again. I nearly had no power to drive, but enough to slow roll it. Of course, a little, no, a lot of concern crossed our minds at that point. I was able to crawl it to the nearby gas station where we shut off the Rodeo, hoping it was a temp problem, and re-started it. Nope, same problem, the Reduced Power light and CEL still came on. I filled up the tank and after sitting for a few minutes, fired it back up to find the Reduced Power warning light was no longer on, but the CEL was still illuminated. We had "normal" power, so off to Autozone we went. While there, I got the free diagnostics test run, which indicated some type of air flow failure code and idle speed failure code. My buddy was looking around the store and came up with the idea to check the PCV filter, which he found to be pretty dirty. The Autozone employee suggested we clean around the air filter and carburetor and engine area since it was very dirty under the hood. My buddy suggested I should purchase a $4 PCV filter, which he believed would solve the problem. Well, I did, but the CEL came on again after I started the Rodeo. We both agreed we'd take it back to his house and clean the areas suggested to us. Just after I pulled out of the parking lot, the CEL went off, which led my buddy to believe it took a little bit of running time and increased power output for the new PCV filter to be effective. So far, so good....the CEL didn't come back on once during the ride to his house. We cleaned the areas suggested and decided to call it a day. I drove home and to my job later that night and back home again without the CEL coming on. I'm going to drive it for a couple of days and then take it back for emissions retesting. If it holds up, I'll post a very brief note to let you all know.

So, all-in-all, I spent under $45 to repair "my" problem that the American Service Station was going to charge me over $600 to replace the wrong item. And to think, I paid them $85 to troubleshoot the problem...lesson learned. Good thing for "good" friends!

I've had that problem a million times to. ALWAYS turns out to be a clogged EGR valve. Running fine, all of a sudden reduced power comes on, CEL comes on shortly after that. Vehicle will barley run. Just unbolt the EGR valve, spray it down with carb cleaner and let it soak for a min. Use a screw driver to make sure the flap inside will move freely and isint stuck in an open or closed position, and reinstall. I traded my rodeo tuesday for a 2002 Yukon, so far im pretty happy. My rodeo experience wasnt a great one.

Well, well, well, I PASSED! I took my Rodeo for emissions testing today and saw the sad look on the shops technician when my Rodeo passed. The technician did say, the CEL will probably come on in the near future because of some "ghost codes" that don't show up during the emissions test. Hmmm, this coming from the same place that wanted to charge me over $800 to fix "their" diagnosed problem. Ha!

Okay, my buddy and his dad figured out the reason for the "Reduced Power" warning light. Their best analysis was that there was air in the fuel lines after we reconnected them. Makes sense. A full tank of gas (part of the reinstallation procedure) and some time to run the engine in operating range rectified that issue.

Well, I hope any of you experiencing a similar problem can get away with spending under $50 for parts and have a buddy who is as mechanically inclinded as mine to help you.

Steak dinners for my buddy at O'Charleys are on me for a while!

We all seem to have several things in common. "Gas Sending Unit", "EGR valve". It seems that since there is so many instances of these problems that Isuzu would have to do something about these problems, like a recall or something. My 2000 Isuzu is just over 64000 miles and I've already got a rod nocking. I have all the records for oil changes and everything. My EGR Valve has been out for a while (since 50000 miles or so), also my Gas Sending Unit is acting up. I have to rely on my trip odometer just to know how much gas I have. I have decided since my rod is knocking to get a used engine put in it. This will solve the knocking and the EGR Valve but still I have the Gas Sending Unit. Has anyone tried to send this thread to Isuzu to show them that there is such a problem with their product?

I finally just sold my rodeo. It was a mechanical nightmare. the egr valve constantly screwing up, sending unit went out and had to fight with isuzu for weeks to get it warrantied. Rods knocking. can i recommend a 02 Yukon to anyone :) 4.8L V8, getting me 15-16 mpg and 2x the room of my rodeo ;)

The trick to the gas gauge problem with Rodeos and Passports is to replace the fuel sending unit. The dealer will tell people they need a whole new fuel pump or some other costly repair when really all that is needed is the FUEL SENDING UNIT. I have heard several people say they have bought theirs on eBay.com for cheap and it worked out great! That is what I did and it saved me $500 and it worked out perfect!

I finally asked Isuzu in Sparks Nevada how much to replace the sending unit. They said $280 and I knew the flat rate book was only 1.6 hrs. hmmmm. $85/hr shop rate and $50 for unit doesn't add up. Woah, I can do that. My buddy and I, he's a total nerdy computer guy, and I bought the sending unit and we installed it in in my driveway with a couple tools and a $39 floor jack in an hour. That included a iced tea break on my deck.

Now my break dash light is staying on. groan. Wonder what's up with that...

I have 2 Isuzu dealers in my area, and I called them both and both of them want to sell me a fuel pump, along with the sending unit. I remember I bought just the sending unit in the past, I don't know if they changed the rules or what... Can anybody provinde a Isuzu part number, so I can call them and ask for the part with the part number?
Thanks

When they finally replaced my unit under warranty, they replaced the fuel pump and the sending unit. I would doubt they would have went to any extra trouble/cost if they didnt have to, so i am inclined to believe maybe you do have to buy the pump/unit togeather. Doesnt make sense though.

I have a 2001 Rodeo LS. I had the problem with the fuel guage indicating low fuel, yet I fill up and only put in 10 gallons or less. I have gone from 330 miles when full to 180 miles. This is crazy. A few years ago, while under warranty, the dealership replaced this part. Now it is happening AGAIN and not under warranty. They want $550 min. I called a garage and told them about the problem and that I read on this forum that the part can be bought WITHOUT the fuel pump. I am hoping he can get the unit and install. I don't know how to install it so I will have to pay someone. What do I do if he cannot get this part?

I'm so glad that I am not the only one dealing with this stupid fuel guage problem! Mine always says empty and the light is always flashing. I'm a college student and have hardly any money, so I hope that I can get this resolved fairly easily. I drive from Oklahoma to Dallas frequently and this problem is the worst possible thing that could have happened! (Actually I shouldn't say that... Knock on wood) Unlike some of you guys, I don't know that any of my friends or family would be able to help me install a new fuel sending unit. Any advice? Should I purchase one myself and take it to a mechanic? I know nothing about cars and would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

It's not just the Troopers. My Isuzu '02 Axiom has the EXACT same problem. Gas light blinks, fuel gage goes to to empty. Only shows full when I fill it up or on occasion when I turn on the power before starting it up.

Anyone have a talk-thru walk-thru step by step intructions on replacing the sending unit already posted? Don't want to recreate the wheel if someone already did. There is very little published on Isuzu maintenance that I have been able to gain access to.

THANKS!

I have a 1999 Rodeo and I'm pretty sure that the Fuel Tank Sending Unit was replaced due to a recall in 2001 or so. I can't seem to find the recall notice - maybe it was a paid service repair. Anyway CEL came on last year and they charged a ton to flush the EGR, then more money to replace the EGR valve. CEL is off, but my fuel performance is in the toilet. Any suggestions?

How can I possibly solve this problem without forking over $600? I have read to take my car to Autozone and get them to run a diagnostics test on it. Would cleaning the fuel filter and carbuerator work?

You are correct... the first step would be to get a CEL read at Autozone. There's a chance that the problem will be obvious from that.

Yes, I have been having the same problem for about 40,000 miles, but did not know what to do. Any suggestions????

Just read the mssg about fuel gauge and EGR issues. I believe you have two problems.
I have a 2000 Rodeo myself.
1. inaccurate or no-read fuel gauge: This is a fuel sender issue. I had the fuel sender replaced under warranty about 1 1/2 years ago. Because the sender unit is not considered part of the power trane 100k warranty that came with the vehicle, the dealership replaced the whole fuel pump stating that "the sender unit is an intrical part of the pump and therefore falls under the vehicle's 100k power trane" warranty. It did'nt cost me anything, but the bill would have been approx $200-300.
2. bad EGR valve. Just had this one happen (Dec 05). similar to other emails, the dealership wanted to charge me >$450 just to replace the valve, but I said "NO" because this is abnormally high. I need some info on where I might purchase a new valve or if the valve simply needs to be cleaned out. The dealer told me the valve allows exhaust to be refed back into the combustion chamber to help eliminate harmful exhaust fumes and to allow greater fuel mileage. dealer said the valve was "blocked". if anyone can help, please direct me to a step by step procedure for replacing this faulty valve (or if replacement is needed).

Thanks!

Regarding the CEL; you need to service your EGR valve. The reason this valve has gone bad is that burning regular or cheaper gas builds up carbon deposits in the valve. Over time, the vavle will stick, causing it not to function properly. When the valve sticks, the vacuum port does not open and causes your vehicle to run rough or stall or both.

You have one of two choices to fix this issue:
1. replace the EGR valve
2. repair the EGR valve

When I took my Rodeo to the dealership they wanted a whopping $550 just to replace the valve. This is an enormouse expense for a fixable problem.

Here is a guide to cleaning the EGR.

1. Remove the EGR valve.
2. There are 2 holes; the larger one is the one that supplies exhaust flow. don't worry about this hole. The other is a vacuum port. This port is where exhaust gases are directed when the EGR valve opens. What happens to the EGR valve is that carbon deposits stick to the walls of the vacuum port and over time will restrict flow normally about 30,000 miles. You can offset this occurrence by burning a tank of premium gas for every 4-5 tanks of regular gas.
3. Check your local dealer for Intake cleaner ask about BG products. To make this fix you will need is the intake cleaner (spray can), or head to your local parts place and pick up a can or carb cleaner that is safe for O2 sensors
4. Find something to plug the larger hole with. Make sure it will not vibrate and fall out because there will be slight exhaust pressure on it. Make sure it is plugged real well because the cleaning fluid is highly flammable and any leaks in this hole will cause a flame.
5. Once the large hole is plugged, start the vehicle. Then spray intake cleaner into the vacuum port. You may have to raise the idle or just open the throttle by hand to spray into the hole. Spray until the can is empty.

you don't need to start the truck in order to clean it.

I have several of these fuel sending units for Rodeso and Passports from 1998-2002. Please email me at anicol@cfl.rr.com if you would like one for under $40.00. I have sold over 300 of these on eBay in the past year. They are original, brand new OEM factory Isuzu fuel sending units with complete installation instructions. I stand behind my items. Either look on eBay for seller awnicol25 or email me. Do not let the dealers rip you off by getting you to buy a fuel pump or some other item. You will not need to calibrate after the fuel sending unit is installed either, as some dealers may tell you. Best of luck!

ALL you folks with CEL for sending unit, go here:

http://www.isuzu.com/owners_warranty_2000to2002.jsp#

Click on this link:
Isuzu's 10-Year/120,000-Mile Powertrain Limited Warranty

A window will pop up that shows all the stuff covered for 10 yrs.

And yes, fuel pump is covered. As well as gaskets/seals, etc. It even covers CV joints and other suspension parts.

I called Crest Cadillac/Isuzu on 75 in Dallas/Plano and TOLD them I was bringing my 2001 Rodeo in for warranty work. They did it in half a day, no questions asked. Of course, whenever you bring in the unit for anything, especially warranty work, they'll tell you your overdue for the 60k, 75k, 80k, etc., checkup/maintenance. You ask them what all that covers and they'll say,
"We check this and this and change oil, filters, etc. for only $300."
That's when I said, "Ok, I'll call when it's convenient for me to bring it in...."
then go to the beer store and get a case of Coors since I just saved $$ and alot of time under the Rodeo.

Service managers at ALL auto repair places are leaned-on very heavily to AVERAGE $300 for every vehicle that rolls into the garage...no matter whether it needs repairs or not. Of course, rich folks and dumbasses can get steamrolled into dropping $1k or more depending on how rich and/or stupid they are. And single ladies that have no clue are the sweetest carion for the vultures. Did you hear the internet wav file that has a lady getting a quote for 2 transmissions....1 to go forward and the other reverse?? Or that her headlights were low on "halogen" and needed a fill? NO kidding....and she was ready to pay a $2500 bill for this and a slew of other gags.
Good thing is was her dad that put his mechanic friend up to this 'joke' to teach her to learn something about cars.

If the dealership gives you any shit about the warranty work, call the headquarters phone on the Isuzu website and let them know who's refusing to do warranty work.

Thanks for the suggestion igneous! I had the exact same problem with my 2000 Isuzu Rodeo which has 116k miles on it. The CEL code was reading PO463 ("the PCM has determined that the voltage signal from the fuel level sensor is too high for the current engine operating conditions."). I read this forum and took it to the dealer and explained the catch-22 situation. They wouldn’t sell me the "fuel level sensor" separately since it was part of the fuel pump assembly. BUT...the fuel pump was in fact covered under Isuzu’s 10 year/120,000 mile warranty. They took the vehicle in and dealt with Isuzu directly and, long story short, the replaced the entire fuel pump under warranty, costing me nothing. Now everything is working fine (and I’m crossing my fingers). Thanks again.

I'm an owner of a 2003 rodeo, and my cam sensor went out too. let me tell you what happen to me! My car would not start one morning I thought it was due to someone steeling my gas. After several attemps of putting gas in the car and tring to start it, still no luck. I called isuzu rodeside assistance and they towed me to the nearest dealer. before they towed me the miles on my truck was at 46,546 (still under warrenty). Come to find out that my computer system was not regertering the gas, and the fuel sending unit was broken. After the DEALER so called fixed that, my truck still would not start. It would crank but not turn over. Now it's going on the second week of the DEALER having my truck leaving me with no loaner car! During the third week I beagin to get antsy. I started going to the DEALER everyday to check on the STATS. My truck was still in the same place that I left it. On the forth week they begain to work on it, they had to do some type of diagnoses that cost 500.00 and after they diagnose it then they can fix it. well they found that my cam sensor was bad and it was not covered under my warrenty which goes up to 50,000 miles or 3 years, the origanal owner brought the truck in Jan of 04. (mind you I had the truck for only 5 months and 3 months earlier I had to take the truck into the DEALER cause the CEL came on,. they told me that my gas cap was not on tight. go figure. they knew that I was about to encounter a major problem then.) I fought with them beacuse I knew that I was still under 50,000 miles. I called the towing co and the insurence co. and got proof that my miles were less then 50,000 miles prior to my truck arriving there. the tech told me and my insurence co that she had no idea how my miles got to 50,000 because she knew that it was 46,540 when it came in. I have to sue the DEALER in small claims court because before they released my truck after playing in it and adding miles to MY ride I had to pay a wopping 1000.00. Oh and when I got in my truck to leave, already mad as a BULL. MY TRUCK WOULD NOT START!!!!!! they had to give me a jump. The tech said the battery was low cause he had the doors open.( LOL ) I get back to work and contenue my day, ready to lleave in my fixed truck.........AND IT WOULDN"T START AGAIN!!!! I have had my truck back for 6 days now and had to get a jump 4 times. and the truck sounds like it don't want to start. I plan to trade it in this weekend!!!! Pray for the single mom, resently divorced, trying to stand up on her own, they see us coming a mile way. (SMILE)

After reading this I feel a little bit better and can see that everyone is having the same problems as me. I have a 99 v6 automatic rodeo and just the other day I ran out of gas. I called AAA and they came to put more gas in it but the car wouldn't start still. The AAA guy told me I could have blown my fuel pump and they had to call a tow truck to tow it. Well just about a month ago my starter went out on the car and I took it to Pep Boys and they charged me $400:swear: dollars to fix it! UGH...so this time the tow truck guy suggested a friend of his who's a mechanic and told me he could give me a good price. Well, I just got the call today from him telling me I needed a new fuel pump (if that's even the problem) and that it's going to cost me $500.!!!! Is this right??? I have been trying to research this all over the computer and can't really find anything. I was ripped off before and I'm trying to not let this happen again. I don't know what to think. If anyone can confirm that this is the right price please do! I'm going crazy with all these car problems and now I have to pay $500!!!! If anyone can give me some advice that would be great! Thanks!! :)

Same thing happened to me, 2001 Rodeo with 57k miles on it (original owner). Fuel guage starting jumping up and down, on full then empty then on full again, the gas light would begin flashing and then the CEL would come on. Took it to the dealer, they said it was a bad fuel send unit. They wanted to charge me $155 + tax to fix it (100 deductible from my extended 3rd party warranty and 55 for diagnostics). I called Isuzu, they said they treat the fuel send unit and the fuel pump as one unit, this means its covered under the 10 year 120k mile Powertrain warranty. Dealer ended up replacing fuel pump and mass air flow sensor 100% free of charge. Took about a day to service. Very pleased overall with the service and the vehicle.:grinyes:

Hi everyone!
Obviously I have the same problem...2K Rodeo...54K miles. Now let me ask you this: other than the fact that it's extremely annoying to be going through this and having that stupid CEL up at weird times, has it done anything else? Would it be so bad if I decide to put a piece of carboard to cover that and not look at it? What could happen? I fill up weekly and know how my truck is on gas (very good, by the way)...Will the computer tell my truck that it's out of gas or something and stop running? Your comments are very much appreciated. Thanks.

Maybe ya'll can help me out...? I have had a bad sending unit for a while, but lived with it. Well my wife ran the '99 Rodeo out of gas and I have not got it started since. I replaced the filter and the fuel pump. The fuel pump powers up and you can hear it prime, but no fuel is getting to the line. I removed the filter from the line and the line is bone dry. I watched as my friend tried to start the car with the filter completely off the line and no fuel spewed out or anything. Any suggestions? Does it need to be re-pressured or something? Thanks in advance

Does the problem with the sending unit cause it to use more gas? I suddenly went down to 80 miles per tank!! I used to get over 300 per tank. PLEASE HELP!
My CEL is on and the gas gauge seems drunk.
Also, it pulls hard right while driving. No one seems to be able to allign them. 2 places have sked me not to bring it back because they cant get it alligned.

I'm also having to change the EGR valve. The mechanic said I will have to use 93 octane fuel every 4th fill up to keep the EGR valve unclogged. Regular unleaded is what is clogging the valve. I just bought this 2000 Rodeo. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

Hey guys,
Might I suggest to all of those who are having problems with their sending units to go ahead and replace the entire fuel pump. I had the same problem at about 75K. CEL-Sending unit bad. Went to the dealer-500+ dollars. Purchased the sending unit for 35 bucks from the dealer. My nephew installed it in about 2 hours. Hes a mechanic and has access to a nice shop. Keep in mind, for diy you have to drop the gas tank to access the fuel pump. anyway, the CEL went out and ran fine for a while. At about 85K, the rodeo left me sitting on the interstate. No fuel. Therefore, i had to replace the fuel pump only 10000 miles after i replaced the sending unit. So I strongly suggest that if you are going to replace the SU, replace the pump also, you can get them at autozone or advance for around 150, and they come with the sending unit. Kill two birds with one stone!

I have a 2001 Isuzu Rodeo also & like everyone else I am having problems with the egr valve & had to deal with the fuel tank sending unit. It all started this summer when I bought the suv. Drove great at the car lot but same day going home engine light started blinking. Gages were all over the place & bad gass mileage. Took it back to the shop, they put on a new fuel tank sending unit. Not even by fall having engine liht blinking again. Now egr valve. Car acting funny.

I bought one of those fuel sending units from awnicol....

Saved me a hefty chunk o cheddar... and worked like a charm. Highly recommend it.

Dropping the fuel tank wasn't half as hard as I imagined it. Whole job took about 1.5 hours.
