I have a 1995 Jetta III GL, 2.0L man. trans. While driving down the hwy at 60mph, it suddenly & quickly lost power. When trying to accelerate it just bogged down and shortly after completely died. The car has about 86k miles.
I think I've narrowed it down to the fuel pump (or fuel pump system). I would like to know if the fuel pump runs on 12vdc. I am only getting about 10.5vdc at the fuel pump connector.
I replaced the fuel filter and checked for fuel flow and there is basically none (at the filter).
Any help, suggestions, troubleshooting tips will be greatly appreciated.
The fuel pump runs off 12V, 10.5V is a little low, but may just be due to slightly low battery from checking things out. It would be better to have at least 11.5V back there with a charged battery. Regardless, the pump should still run (perhaps more slowly) off your current voltage. Make sure the ground is good too.
boschmann - you're right on the money. The problem ended up being a bad fuel pump sender unit. It was simply out of gas. New pump and sender unit and no more problem.
