I have a 2000 S10. Gas guage never goes below 1/4 of a tank. Truck has an 18 gallon gas tank...but...If you go until the truck shuts off for lack of fuel, you can fill it back up with 12 gallons. Where is the other 6 gallons of gas? Seems like when the fuel in the tank gets down to the last 6 gallons, it thinks its out of gas. I know the gas is there, but why doesnt it pick it up? Plz help! :banghead:

Has this been happening since you've owned it or is this something recent?

I noticed it happening about two years ago, after running out of gas twice in 3 days when gauge still showed 1/4 tank. Now it's starting to shut off at just under a 1/4 of a tank. I know it has gas, it only takes 12 gallons to fill it up, and it's an 18 gallon tank.

Interesting. I am having a very similar problem with my 1993 S-10. It acts like it is out of gas when the gauge still shows that I have a 1/4 tank. I have a 20 gallon tank, but it only takes 14-16 to fill it up.

Merlin, Ditto.
I have a 94 S-10, with a 20gal tank and the Guage shows 1/8 of a tank when I fill up, it takes no more than 14-15 Gallons, leaving 5-6 gallons somewhere. But I havn't run out of gas. Normally I just use my trip-meter. And fill up every 200-240 miles.

I have a digital dash in my '89. It is empty when gauge has 3 bars left. It takes 18 gallons so I know it's empty though. Took me a while to learn that 1/4 tank means empty...

more than likely it is the electronic fuel pump check chevys recalls and complaints and i bet you will find it is a common prob. i am willing to say that a new fuel pump will fix yalls prob. i have a 97 s-10 and the fuel pump doesn't seal right in the tank i have had to replace it twice due to fuel leaks.

Try this. Unhook the sending unit wires at the tank. Turn the key to on, the guage should read E. Then take a jumper, a paper clip works just fine, and stick one end in one wire and the other end in the other wire. The guage should now read F. (Or the other way around. If the guage does this then the sending unit is bad. If the guage does not do this then the guage or the wires are bad.

( I know the newer trucks seem to have a sending unit problem too ...)
