Question blinkers that some times work

The blinkers in my '00 work only when they want to for instance if the switch is on but nothing is happening and i turn on the wipers or turn the steering wheel they might come on all of the sudden. I don't know if this can relate but my 90 taurus had this problem it was a ignition switch under the steering column. does the alero have this switch if so where is it?

Had the same problem a year ago in my wife's Alero. The problem was the flasher relay. You can check this out real easily. The next time the blinkers do not work, press the Hazard switch in and out a few times. you can also tap on the dash above the Hazard swith a couple of times. The reason for this is that the flasher relay is on the back of the Hazard switch. If this is the problem, easy enough to fix yourself.

I pulled the instrument cluster out and reached behind the Hazard switch to pull out the relay. Took 20 minutes to replace and has worked ever since.

Similar to Malibu Blinkers

The Malibu was recalled for a defective hazard switch, that being the culprit. I forget which model years (think '01 & '02), but my '98 wasn't the subject of the recall, nor have I had any related probs. I don't recall if the Alero and Grand Am were involved in the recall. You might want to check.

Re: blinkers that some times work

There was a recall on the Alero's for a faulty hazard switch. I believe it was for 1999-2001 models (all trims).

Re: blinkers that some times work

Re: blinkers that some times work

Apparently this only affected the american cars. My wife has a 2001 alero purchased in Canada. It was made in the states. Problem was Hazard switch, just like mentioned before. Covered free by dealership

Manufactures recall on Turn Signal/Hazzards

If you have a 2000 or a 2001 Olds Alero and are having problems with your turn signals or hazzards, look at this link about a Safety recall on the Alero.

http://www.arifleet.com/Recall.html

It was issued Feb 2004 and is recall number 03043

If you have already had this fixed and paid for it, you can also get reimburssed if they approve.

My car hasn't had this problem but I'm taking it in to be fixed anyhow since they are paying for it. Hope this helps some of you.

Angry

I had the same problem. I had the hazard relay switch replaced as part of the recall, then my signal lights started going off by themselves AFTER the recall was done. I took it back to the dealer that did the recall and they said I needed a whole new signal light assembly!! I wrote a letter to the dealer, GM, and the BBB. After weeks of fighting, the dealer agreed to pay half of the new signal light assembly. I still say they screwed something up when they replaced the hazard relay switch!

re:flasher

Well my kids 2002 Alero now has the SAME problem as the recall. I called the numbers, talked to dealers and have found out that the 2002 is not included. Now the GM folks said to hold on to any bills becasue there is always the chance it could get added later. Seems like a damn stupid place to locate the flasher. Wish everything was as accessible as in older cars!

Re: blinkers that some times work

I have the same problem with my 2002 Alero along with some other issue with this vehicle. I've noticed that I'm not the only one. Is there an easy fix for this?

Re: blinkers that some times work

I believe the part, which fits in the palm of your hand, costs about 27 bucks and then labor. i got mine fixed last year and when olds issued the recall, i got full reimbursement because i save ALL my repair receipts. to temporarily fix the problem, hit your hazard button and try the blinkers again.
