The clutch and brake are very "hard" in the newer porsche's also...this is a good thing. stiff clutch means won't break as easy and the brakes are perfect. Porsche brakes modulate by how hard you push them, not how far you push them...just like a real race car. As far as lare-70's car not having the power of "new" car....ummm...what did you expect. It may have more HP then your mx6, but Hp to weight is HP to weight...it doesn't matter if porsche makes the car or not. I think you have unreasonable expectations of a 23 year old car.
It may not have been running well also. Many older porsche's aren't running to great anymore. Also, if you aren't used to driving insane oversteering cars I wouldn't recommend an old porsche. The engine in the back, coupled with an older suspension geometry, coupled with inexperience with RWD can be a dangerous combo. I have been a porsche fan since i was about 8. My dad gave me a magazine all about them...i probably read it 100 times!
