Speedometer - cable or sensor?

Having trouble with the speedometer on my 97 GT...just curious if the speedometer is cable driven or sensor driven.

Thanks!

Re: Speedometer - cable or sensor?

Sorry for the delayed response - no, the tires are the correct size for the car...here's what the speedometer does..although it is extremely unpredictable.

When I accelerate, usually during a hard acceleration like an on ramp, the needle will work ok up until 45 or 50, then stop, then JUMP to 57, stop....then JUMP to 65....then start working again. If I give the dashboard a swift pound of the fist, then the needle jumps to where it should be and the problem goes away...til the next time I accelerate hard. Note: I have had this problem under smooth accelerations as well, makes it hard to pinpoint when it happens.

try unplugging the instrument cluster and bending any loose conectors at the harness a little to tighten the conection. if that doesn't help you'll probably need to send it out for repairs.
